Unfortunately the majority of Anti-Virus manufacturers do not allow the free editions of their products to be installed on a Server Operating System and any such installation will usually fail. AVG and several other free, equivalent AVs are just the same.

I, myself, would much prefer to purchase an AVG license, but ClamWin is a Free Anti Virus which is Server 2008 compatible. I install it for test purposes on some of my Virtual Machines and haven't had too many issues with it. I wouldn't trust it in production though. http://www.clamwin.com/

I have been using Rising Anti-Virus 2008 on my 2008 Server for almost 6 months with no problems. Now a 2009 version has been released recently and I don't have personal experience with the 2009 version but the 2008 version works a treat and for free.

You can download it from:

I would be hesitant to use a non-commercial product in a production environment.  We use McAfee's which works well.  Not exactly cheap though.

This is not for a production environment but for my laptop.  It came with Vista which was nothing but trouble so i upgraded to Windows Server 2008 and everything works a treat.

Take a look at ClamWin, then. It does seem to be an upcoming Anti-Virus product which many people are recommending.

I have used every virus scanner under the sun. Most of my clients come in with some form of virus scanner so I have experience with just about everything you can find.

In the free world there are really only 3 that I would even suggest:
- AVG
- CLAMAV
- AVAST

AVG will no longer be free as they plan on removing the free option in April.

Not to worry in my experience Avast was the best by far. It caught many more viruses for the clients and was much less intrusive. ClamAV is nice and lightweight but I have had many viruses slip through its cracks.

Here are the direct links to the free versions of all.

Best of luck!

The link I gave for Clam was the linux version! Sorry here is your windows version:

The problem with Avast, and AVG is the free versions won't install on any edition of Microsoft Server. He is not looking for a workstation (ie XP or Vista) solution.

I think my machine may be infected with a virus so i am looking for some free software to disinfect it, not necessarily to run ongoing.

May want to try spybot and malware bytes. Both are free. I realize they are not virus scanners, but you may want to try them as some malware/spyware tend to act like viruses.

As far as I know ClamAV has not realtime scan feature.

Whilst it isn't free, I have been using F-PROT on all my test servers.  If it is a web server only, I do also use it.  My reading says $50 for 10 copies.
