The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

New Server 2008 installation on existing 2003 domain

Asked by manav08 in Windows Server 2008, Windows 2003 Server, Active Directory

Hi Experts,

We have a server which is extremely old and has had its own share of dramas, so we decided to replace it with a Brand New DELL Server with Windows 2008 (x 64 edition).
This Server has been shipped by DELL and should be here in a week or so.

Now this is what I want to do -
I want to hookup this server to the existin network, join it to the windows domain, make it a replica domain controller and then transfer all FSMO roles etc from the old domain controller( Server 2003) to the new domain controller (Server 2008 x64) so that the new server acts as the primary DC. Once this is done I will take off the Old Server permanently.

I would like someone to advise me on whether this is the best solution for our scenario or is there a better way to go about it.
I would also like someone to guide me through following the steps mentioned above, as I have very limited experience with Windows Server 2008.

Thanks in Advance.
Please be patient as I will be awarding points once I have tested the solution.
