Question

Terminal Server 2008 and printing from remote locations

Asked by: tech_tonic

Hi All,

I have a client that is thinking of purchasing a Windows 2008 std. Server for use as a Terminal server ONLY.
they have 3 sites they want to connect to this server and they will do this by a public IP address for that server.

each of these sites has ONLY a Modem/ Router and 1 or 2 Thin clients.

the problem is that they want to put a network pinter in each location so they they can print from each location.
as they only have a basic switch, modem / router and thin clients Is it even possible to setup these printers??

the thin clients are HP T5145.

they are willing to purchase anything additional to allow this and they have not selected a rinter yet, all the need is mono laser networked.

I am sure you can print from TS to your local printer as long as you install the printer driver and create variable on the TS server you are good to go. Also, Go to ther TS server and go to All programs --> Administrative Tools --> Terminal service configuration (the middle one) --> Connections --> Right Click RDP-tcp --> Properties --> Client Settings tab. In there, you want to make sure the Windows printer mapping option is unchecked
Check this solution for the step to create variable in TS server:

1) Make sure your printer is able to be put on a network (ie: Has a built in NIC or something like a HP JetDirect Box)

You trying to print something on your working on in the Terminal Server to the Local Printer?  Or are you just attempting to use the Terminal Server as a WAN Printer Server?

In case 1, just install the printer driver on the local workstation, when you RDP into the TS make sure it's checked in the options to use local printers.  This will make your local printers appear as available printers in your RDP session.

In case 2, seems kind of a waste to run a print server over your WAN.  You'll need to go into more details whether there's a VPN, on the same domain etc for exact directions.  However, in this case you might be better off spending like $30 per site to get a Print server to hook up on each LAN.  Check out www.newegg.com for some good prices

Hi Guys thanks for the info.

deadite, i was hopingto just setup  print server on the local LAN's to acheive the printing.
however, we are not using workstations ONLY thin clients.

as the HP T5135 has the hp proprietry OS, im unsure if you can setup a Printer via TCP/IP, then have it MAP to the TS Server.

do we need to purchase Thin clients that have windows XP Embedded on them? the cleitn does NOT want to use workstations ONLY thin clients so they can lock down the security.

Sorry, missed that MINOR detail of the thin client.  I've never used HP's OS so I'm not sure what options you have as far as local printer servers.   But, you can set up the printers on your TS.  Log on your TS as an administrator, add a TCP Port and print driver for each printer at the remote sites.  Then when your clients log in to their RDP to the TS, they'll have that network printer available.

Hi deadite,

thats what i wanted to do. however. at present they do not have a VPN setup so there is no way to contact the local subnet.

unless it is posible to setup a port from a static Internet IP to route "printing" traffic there is no way t ocontact the local IP addressed printer...

any suggestions would be much appreciated.

does any one know of a way to do this?

what about a thin client with XP embedded? could we set it up with the printer and share it?
