Asked by: awolarczuk

My Windows 2008 Server
 - Running Exchange 2007
 - IIS

Has stopped working on the internet but cant still be seen from the internal work stations on the network

if i enable the DHCP on the ADSL modem and change the Server from static to DHCP it can then see the internet and can ping other computers on the network with no issues,

When i try to ping other computers and external site when the static ip is set i get

Do "ipconfig /all" and make sure you have the default gateway on the server set correctly.  Make sure it is the same as when you have DHCP enabled.

by: jrfaustPosted on 2009-08-11 at 19:26:46ID: 25075266

Also make sure the subnet mask is correct.

by: PriceDPosted on 2009-08-11 at 19:29:18ID: 25075276

Try this.  See if someone else has the IP address of .100.  Unplug the server...ping .100 from another computer and see if you get a response.  If you do then you have a IP conflict.  With the info provided I assume the servers IP is x.x.x.100.

Can you enable DHCP and then run ipconfig /all again and send the results?  If you look at the default gateway, the first entry says 0.0.0.0, which is no default gateway.

Assuming that your default gateway is 10.0.0.138, then your TCP/IP properties should look like this:

by: awolarczukPosted on 2009-08-11 at 20:21:46ID: 25075511

thats what is looks like :) always has

by: awolarczukPosted on 2009-08-11 at 20:24:46ID: 25075525

by: jrfaustPosted on 2009-08-11 at 20:29:25ID: 25075548

Check the Advanced settings and make sure that there is only one default gateway listed there.

by: PriceDPosted on 2009-08-11 at 20:36:16ID: 25075565

Can you send the screen shots of the IP setting like jrfaust show.  Also, attache screen shot from the advance tab as well.

by: awolarczukPosted on 2009-08-11 at 20:40:04ID: 25075574

all good under there

by: PriceDPosted on 2009-08-11 at 20:45:50ID: 25075594

It is strange that is was working and just with a reboot it is not.  Maybe a NIC problem.  Do you have an extra NIC around, install it; and enter the needed IP information.  Try to connect via that NIC.

by: jrfaustPosted on 2009-08-11 at 20:49:27ID: 25075608

Try this:

1. Click Start
2. Right click on Command Prompt
3. Click Run as administrator and continue
4. Enter "route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.138 metric 1" and press enter
5. Test the Internet

by: awolarczukPosted on 2009-08-11 at 21:56:15ID: 25075843

okj that looks like it is working with the internet now but my exchange has stopped working

by: jrfaustPosted on 2009-08-11 at 22:16:55ID: 25075891

Do "ipconfig /all" and "route print" and paste the results.

Did exchange stop working when you did the "route add" command?

by: awolarczukPosted on 2009-08-11 at 22:47:02ID: 25075983

yea it looks that way

by: jrfaustPosted on 2009-08-11 at 23:04:15ID: 25076049

If you reboot the server, the route that we added will be removed, or you can use the "route delete command" to remove it without rebooting.

by: awolarczukPosted on 2009-08-11 at 23:25:40ID: 25076125

so from what you are saying the command we entered will not stay when the computer is restarted, how do we set it so it stays fixed ???

To make the route persistent so that it will stay when the computer is rebooted you need to add -p to the command:

route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 10.0.0.138 metric 1 -p
