WSUS Setup Problems

I have installed WSUS on one of my servers (Win 2008 Std), and I have used the registry entry method to set that server, and 2 laptops (Windows 7 Ultimate, joined to the domain) to do updates from that WSUS server (I want to validate everything before I use GP to get all the computers doing it).  My computers are still getting updates, but I believe they are from MS rather than my WSUS.  The WSUS console does not indicate that it sees any computers and reports are all coming up blank.  Each computer was rebooted after the registry change and has done updates since the reboot.

How do I figure out why they are not doing updates?  Below is an export of the registry entries I used.

When you made the registry change did you also make the corresponding group in the WSUS server?

If you already have the groups configured I would reccomend making a new OU adding your test machines in there and then setting the WSUS gpo only on that OU. This will let you test client side targeting but only on the machines you want.

There may be some issues with your registry edits, at lest with the GPO you know the settings are going to be correct.

Agreed with previous poster.  I'd create a GPO with these settings configured:

1.  Specify Intranet Microsoft Update is enabled
2.  Specify Intranet Update Service
3.  Specify Intranet Statistics Server
4.  Enable Configure Automatic Updates and select which installation and download method you want to use

I'd do this rather than going to registry edit route since you're going to be doing this eventually anyway and so you don't have to research the proper registry keys to modify.

I'll take a look and see if I can figure out the GPO stuff.  I'm normally a programmer, but our sys admin is on maternity leave and I'm the best of what's left, which is fine for AD, DNS, DHCP, but an exec decided they wanted WSUS by the end of the month so I am going to get it done somehow.  I'll be back...

The settings in Wsus are pretty easy to configure.

Hope this helps. I have attached my wsus GPO its pretty straight forward. The only thing you need to do is make sure the computer group name is exactly the same in the GPO and in the WSUS console.

I would suggest downloading and installing the group policy management console. This makes editing the group policies a little bit easier with a nice GUI.

The steps you want to do here are as follows.

1. Make a new OU in active directory users and computers
2. Move your test machines to that OU
3. Open up the GPMC.msc
4. Drill down until you find your new OU and right click
5. Select create and link GPO
6. Then go through and set the settings above or follow the walkthough on this page.

I got the policy done, and I applied it after I was done, any idea how long it should take for computers to show up in the WSUS Computers list if I've done things correctly?

It can take up to 90 minutes for the policy to apply but there are a few ways to speed it up. What I would do is on the computer where  you applied the policy open up a command prompt and type

gpupdate /force

This will force the client to renew its policy settings. I would do this command three times saying no to a reboot after each one. After the third one manually reboot the machine. This will cause the computer policies to apply and you shoudl then see the computer in the WSUS console.

Thanks.   Unfortunately I am configuring remotely so I can't run that command so I have to wait 90 minutes.  Though that command will probably be useful on any stragglers I end up when I move it to all computers.

You probably will still need to reboot the computer before you will see them in WSUS. Computer policy settings are only applied at startup. You could do a remote reboot using the command.

shutdown -r -m \\computername -t 0 -f

That command will reboot the machine forcing all programs to close.
