Question

why is Active Directory not working on SBS 2003?

Asked by: choy77

Hi,

for some reason my SBS 2003 comes up with the following error:

Naming information cannot be located for the following reason:
The server is not operational.

If you are trying to connect to a domain controller running Windows 2000,
verify that Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 3 or later is installed on the
domain controller, or use the Windows 2000 administration tools. For more
information about connecting to domain controllers running Windows 2000, see
Help & Support.

there have been some problems with this server in that it was having some difficulties starting up just last night and this morning.

It was taking ages to logon and now it is working ok since I stopped some services and restarted.

all is ok now but for this error message above, which means I cannot add new users and will this affect the Terminal Server that I have just set up as well in that it will not let me log on using terminal services.

Thanks for your help.

error is also attached

Go out to a dos prompt (Start->Run->type in cmd and hit enter).  Type in ipconfig /all     check the DNS settings.  To change it go into Control panel and double click on network connections. Right mouse click your Server Local Area Connection and click on properties.  Find the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) entry and double click it. DNS is the lower half of the screen.

You seep to have 2 IP addresses bound to the NIC is there a reason for this?

Remove the 217.36.102.50 IP address from the network card

Then post results of DCDIAG and NETDIAG

by: AwinishPosted on 2009-10-23 at 04:36:19ID: 25643346

Yes, the second IP 217.36.102.50 has to be removed, because the domain controller register its srv records & poniter records in dns using hostname & ip address.

If 2 different ip has been assigned to dc,it creates problem.

Also, check the directory service, frs & dns event log, what does they say.

Check the sysvol is shared & accessible via network by typing \\localhost in run.

The domain naming error can be caused because of accout lock.

Run dcdiag /v,dcdiag /q,dcdiag /fix.

ipconfig /flushdns & ipconfig /registerdns

@awinish did you not see my comment?!?

Author:

Once you have removed the 217.36.102.50 IP address restart the netlogon service then please post DCDIAG & NETDIAG results without verbose logging please as per my original post.

You need to remove the external DNS servers then see if you have errors like demazter said. After removing run ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /registerdns, and dcdiag /fix

Hi.

contacted Microsoft for this they did charge but the problem was fixed..

Hello  Chris,

It was my pleasure to assist you during your " DHCP and DNS not working" issue.  I hope that you were delighted with the service provided to you.  I am providing you with a summary of the key points of the case for your records. If you have any questions please feel free to call me. You can reach me using the contact information below and referencing your case SRQ091024600032.

PROBLEM: DHCP and DNS not working
CAUSE: Active Directory  not functioning.
RESOLUTION: Following are the troubleshooting steps we followed.
1.      We checked the network settings on the server.
2.      We found that TCP/IP filtering was enabled on the NIC card disabled it.
3.      We found that the Dc diag was giving an error LDAP search failed with error 58.
4.      We made registry changes related to winsock but that did not fix the problem.
5.      We reset the TCP?IP stack and winsock but still no go.
6.      We booted the server in safe mode with networking and everything was working fine in safe mode.
7.      We uninstalled the antivirus esat on the server.
