Question

How to prevent collision on hp network

Asked by: fais79

We have implemented a new network consisting ofHP  big central switch and 18 HP managed edge switches.  We also have hp procurve manager.

If there is a loop anywhere in the network it affects the whole network therefore, I wanted to ask how I can prevent collisions to spread to the whole network?  Does something needs configuring to do this??

Thanks.

Hi,

If your using switches there shouldn't be any collisions. Collisions only happen on Ethernet hubs.

I don't think what you're looking for is to prevent collisions, but to prevent broadcast storms, which occour when a broadcast gets cought in a switching loop.  What you need to look at is either Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP).  These protocols prevent switching loops.

Sometimes naughty kids in our school create a loop by plugging in the same cable in two network sockets creating large build up of traffic hence resulting in collision grinding the whole network to halt.

How can I prevent this from happening?? There must be some sort of configuration within the switches that need doing..

Making the links connecting to the switch full duplex links will prevent collisions. By default, the ports are in auto duplex mode so if the connected device is capable they will be in full duplex mode.

Spanning Tree Protocol is enabled by default which will prevent loops.

So basically, you don't have to do anything to prevent collisions or loops.

All the switches are connected via Gig links but loops or collision occuring one switch definitely spread through the whole network.

I have just checked and Spanning Tree is off on all switches.. Shall I turn this ON?

by: rochey2009Posted on 2009-10-29 at 15:33:34ID: 25698902

Yes, turn it on.

by: rochey2009Posted on 2009-10-29 at 15:34:35ID: 25698910

Do it, when no one is using the network. It'll disrupt your network for a short period - 30 to 50 seconds if its standard STP.

by: CthePrezPosted on 2009-10-29 at 15:38:24ID: 25698925

STP or RSTP does cause a delay when activated, it will turn off all the ports on the network for about 30 seconds to a minute.  during this process it's listening for traffic, then learning traffic patterns, then it starts turning ports on.  Newly activated ports will go through this process when a comptuer is plugged in.  this means that it takes a little longer for clients to recieve IP address and such, so just be aware of that when you're adding new computers, or switching ports, etc.  But yes, turning that on will resolve the issue you're expirencing.

The point CthePrez made regarding receiving an IP address - in some cases a PC may not receive a DHCP address because of the delay caused by spanning tree.

Spanning tree disabled? Are you kidding? Its whole job is simply to prevent loops from taking down the network.

Im not sure if the HP switches have the same option that cisco does but.. If I were you the easiest way would be to turn on Spanning Tree, Hardcode all your switch ports to access ports so that they can't form trunk links and for good measure enable BPDU guard to prevent outside managed switches from become the root bridge.  If you have 18 switches hooked up back to back loops will form

Procurve have no spanning tree as default and also Auto-MDIX as default.
Auto-MDIX: automatically adjusts for straight-through or crossover cables.

Asume you have a star topologi, no loops in YOUR setup, only want to prevent naughty kids from linking one port in an edge switch to an other port in same, then you could also
on all edge switches configure:
No Auto-MDIX
Then it would take a crossover patch to make a loop.

(If you configure the central switch also with No Auto-MDIX however, you need a crossover cable in your wiring closets to link the central-sw and every edge-switch)

If you have loops in the network of you own, on purpose or unplanned to come ;-) then spanning tree planning could come into the picture.
As metioned by frution3000 it is important to plan and implement root and backup-root switch.

Please provide topologi if your layout is not star-like / you want the experts to help configure STP.
