Question

SBS2003 to SBS2008 migration, "Windows 2008 FE"

Asked by: rtl_support

I've just recently upgraded our domain from SBS2003 to SBS2008. I've just about completed the migration, but I'm slightly concerned as when I run "winver" on the new server, it states that it is "Windows 2008 FE"??

Can anyone explain this, as I would expect it to state "Windows 2008 SBS", I've read up about "FE", and what I understand is it is a cut down version of SBS??

Any help will be appreciated.

Foundation and SBS are two different products.  Which did you purchase (Foundation is intended for VERY small offices and does not include Exchange.  If you purchased the wrong product, then you'll have to upgrade.

Hi,
I've done quite a few SBS 2003 to 2008 migrations and a few fresh installation of SBS 2008, they all show as Windows 2008 FE. Not entirely sure what it stands for but it's the norm it would seem.

HTH.

Found a technet article on it...

Windows Server 2008 Standard FE is another name for WinWES which itself stands for Windows® Essential Server Solutions

Talk about keeping it simple. :)

Hello ajwuk, I've found that as well, which is why I am concerned, as I definitely installed SBS 2008 standard edition. What I've read up about "Standard FE" aka "WinWESS", is that it is limited to 15 cals!

With regards to Ieew's comment, I've read that as well, but I know exchange is on the server, its working like a dream!

Any more ideas? Bloody microsoft, nothing's easy

Well a number of sites which I have running SBS 2008 (either upgraded or not) have considerably more than 15 computers running concurrently without any problems or licensing issues. I think FE it just the encompassing name given to this suite of server products (including Essential Business Server etc).

Have a look at this forum...
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/1206326.html

"SBS08 isn't an operating system as such, it's a bundle of products. As well as the Exchange, etc licenses, SBS08 Standard includes a license for Windows Server® 2008 for Windows® Essential Server Solutions (WinWESS), also known as Windows Server 2008 Standard FE. This is that actual operating system, and the other packages in the bundle install on top of that.

SBS08 Premium actually includes the WinWESS license for the first box plus a Windows Server 2008 Std Ed license for the second (SQL) box. But that's beside the point. =)"
