Question

join Windows 2008 as a PDC to Windows 2000 advance server DC

Asked by: sara110

Hello,
I want to create new Domain controller in Windows 2008 , I have more than 20000 users in my old AD which is windows 2000 advance server, I couldn't transfer users by using ADMT or other migration tools, so I decided to join my Windows 2008 to my windows 2000 AD and then after I can have all users and passwords and groups, Convert my Windows 2008 to Global catalog and rename this domain to the domain I want,
but there's a problem, when I want to join my windows 2008 to 2000 DC, I receive this error message " the handle is invalid" and then nothing will be happened, even I defined my domain in hosts file in following address   c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
I mean I add a line like this
192.xxx.xxx.xxx     mydomain.com
so that whenever I write "ping mydomain.com" my 2008 can get me the right ip address
so please help me to find a right way to join my 2008 to 2000
Thank you

Have you tried to join the domain using the full dns? like mydomain.com?

2008 has netbios disabled by default.  You'd need to allow Network Discovery through it's Firewall, and enable the Computer Browser service.

Please look over this step by step guides.

Please post ipconfig /all for both your current DC and the Windows 2008 Server.

Make sure you Windows 2000 server is fully patched.

you know in DVD of windows 2008 installation it said it needed windows 2003 sp1 so I tried first to upgrade my DC 2000 to 2003 and then upgrade it to 2008 but there's problem in RID master role and so by adprep command I receive an error message that cannot specify forest schema.
because I have so many users in my 2000 PDC , I have to do this task parallel so  I changed one of my child DC to PDC and disconnected from the main network where my current DC is exist,
I converted this child domain to global catalog  and then in operation master I changed PDC and other roles to this child domain controller name I mean my  main domain controller had this name : x1.mydomain.com       and child domain is x2.mydomain.com        but I couldn't change RID master role and I received error message, is there any way to do this? because I think after I can do this, I can easily upgrade this domain to 2003 and then 2008?
thank you again

At first I tried to just join a Windows 2008 to my 2000 PDC but it seems there's so many problem in my main DC and maybe as aktharchowdhury: , DNS problem, and because my users should authenticate against AD and during working on my main PDC there was authentication problem, I cannot risk on that, this is why I decided to convert my child domain to PDC and then upgrade that and then upgrade that to 2008 . after that have a child domain of 2008 and rename that domain to what I want.
so do you have any suggestion for this scenario? while I got the above error message?

by: AwinishPosted on 2009-11-05 at 01:59:14ID: 25747971

Its much better sara, you run adprep n all command on main domain controller wid proper rights like schema admin right is must.

I have done serveral upgradation & never found any issue.

You do one thing simply upgrade the domain & let me know if you are facing any issue.
Then we wil go step by step for adding new ADC.

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-11-05 at 07:23:43ID: 25750407

Also, doing a inplace upgrade is not a good idea there can be many problems when doing a in-place upgrade.

by: sara110Posted on 2009-11-05 at 10:51:49ID: 25752596

so what should I do? as I said I cannot risk on my main PDC and I should do everything in this child PDC that is now global catalog,
but unfortunately I cannot change RID master to my child domain, this is why adprep not work properly and I receive this error while I want to upgrade my windows to 2003 "your domain controller is not properly prepared" and in help I see "adprep command again"
so what should I do to change RID master role and give it to this child domain, if you imagine that there's no main DC and it is dead and just I have this child domain as backup of that and I should work on this and upgrade it.
Thank you

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-11-05 at 11:44:27ID: 25753124

Again I would recommend not to do a in-place upgrade. You can update the schema on the DC you won't have any downtime when updating the schema by using adprep.

Right now when you run a netdiag do you pass all tests?

by: sara110Posted on 2009-11-06 at 04:07:10ID: 25758377

I cannot understand what you mean by in-place upgrade? I just followed what I read in microsoft upgrade recommendation, I didn't run netdiag yet but I will do tomorrow, adprep have problem and cannot run because RID master cannot change to my child PDC or I can say my new PDC

by: AwinishPosted on 2009-11-06 at 04:10:43ID: 25758396

In place upgrade means upgrading the OS of server instead of clean installation.

Run dcdiag /v , dcdiag /fix , nediag /v, netdiag /fix

Why do you have to move the RID? Please post results for netdiag.

by: sara110Posted on 2009-11-07 at 03:13:54ID: 25765811

because my I changed one of my backup DC to PDC this is why I needed to transfer all fsmo roles to that.

by doing metadata cleanup I could at last seize my fsmo roles to this child domain, but still there's problem in adprep /forestPrep command , I receive error message that in running ldifde.exe ...
so what should I do?

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-11-07 at 20:58:15ID: 25769448

Having all your FSMO roles isn't required and usually out of the norm.

What are you wanting to do a metadata cleanup on? Is the DC failed?

When you say child domain you are talking about the secondary DC?

by: sara110Posted on 2009-11-08 at 04:15:41ID: 25770245

Yes I'm talking about the secondary DC which was the backup of my PDC, my current PDC have alot of problem and I also while I have so many users , I cannot risk on that. so I tried to make this secondary DC as PDC and then work on that and tried to upgrade that, fortunately my first upgrade to 2003 after a long time working on that was solved but now I want to do it to 2008

by: sara110Posted on 2009-11-10 at 07:10:33ID: 25786098

imagine I have 2 computer 1 one is my new PDC that I call it S1  , it is now domain catalog and PDC and has all users on that plus dns, second computer is S2 which I installed windows 2003 sp1 on it and now I want to join it to S1 domain controller,
S1 has windows 2003 sp1 too. but I receive an error message while I was running dcpromo.exe in S2 ,
this is what I found for my error
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=232070
but it doesn't work for me, and still I receive access denied for my user which is administrator of domain, any suggestion?

by: sara110Posted on 2009-11-10 at 07:11:11ID: 25786105

I couldn't join 2008 to 2003 this is why I decided to join 2003 to 2003 PDC

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-11-10 at 12:26:57ID: 25789416

Why can't you join Windows 2008 to Windows 2003?

Please post ipconfig /all and netdiag.

by: sara110Posted on 2009-11-15 at 07:58:25ID: 25825255

all those was ok, I took 2 weeks working on that and at least I found the problem,
when I upgrade from 2000 to 2003 , for making trust between two computers some of default rules remain unchange in 2003 which would change if you have a clean installation of 2003 , I needed to have a users which can check the tickbox of "this computer is trusted for delegation" so I made new user and add it to administrator group, enterprise admin and then I checked the tick of this user is sensitive and cannot be delegated, then I logged in with this user and checked the tick of " this computer is trusted for delegation"
then in the server that I wanted to add to this domain as a domain replicator, I again start the process and this time it could install AD on that successfully,
thank you for your answers, however none of you could help me and I just take alot of time to solve my problem, so I think I should point myself.
