Question

Access to share drive slow on SBS2008 after installing SP2

Asked by: dobrzan

Hi all,

After installation of SP2 for windows server 2008 on my SBS2008, accessing share drive is extremely slow. Even if I manage to get to the file, when trying to open it's slow, and in the end it will say that I should check the path, or file could be read-only.
I checked all permissions, I reset them; files are not read-only as before update everything was perfect.
What should I do? Would uninstalling SP2 help, or this is not an option?

I remove this AV for testing because there are known issues with SEP running on a Windows 2008 platform.

Also, on your network card disable TCP Chimney, TCP Offload, TCP Checksum, IP Offload, IP Checksum.

Like I said before, files open as read-only and before I got warning:
Word experienced an error trying to open the file.
Try these suggestions.
Check the file permission for the document or the drive.
Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space.
Open the file with Text Recovery converter.

On  server all is perfect.

Please help.

On the SBS server enabled NetBios over TCP\IP. Also, start the computer browser service.

Please post ipconfig /all for server.

Isn't NetBios only working with old operating systems like Win98?
Anyway I will try, beacuse I'm despred :) Fingers crossed.

enabling NetBios did not help.Server was restarted.

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-11-23 at 06:59:50ID: 25888002

Did you enabled Netbios over TCP\IP within the Adavance section in your TCP\IP settings under the WINS tab?

Remove the 127.0.0.1 IP address and put the actual IP address in for the server.

Post ipconfig /all for client.

by: dobrzanPosted on 2009-11-23 at 07:06:01ID: 25888074

I did enable NetBios from the location:Adavance section in your TCP\IP settings under the WINS tab.

I did change 127.0.0.1 for actual server IP 10.100.0.20, but then I had a problem with opening ADU&C, or exchange console. Error was coming up.

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-11-23 at 07:27:44ID: 25888354

Once you changed the DNS setting did you do a ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /registerdns, and dcdiag /fix?

by: dobrzanPosted on 2009-11-23 at 07:30:32ID: 25888386

no, I did not. I understand I should do it on the server, once I change dns IP on network properites?

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-11-23 at 13:23:52ID: 25891701

Correct. Also, have you remove SEP?

by: dobrzanPosted on 2009-11-23 at 13:35:31ID: 25891811

No I did not remove SEP. I did disabled SEP on server and clients, no luck. All was working on Monday, and since server was build - aug 09. Is there any explanation for that? that what bugs me :(

by: dariusgPosted on 2009-11-24 at 10:17:31ID: 25899831

Remove SEP fully disabling it doesn't work you must fully remove it. I would get the Symantec cleanwipe tool to fully remove it because the uninstall doesn't work all the time.

by: dobrzanPosted on 2009-11-30 at 02:50:10ID: 25932888

Problem solved, like I said everything started crushing after updates, I kept going uninstalling them and it's working now. SEP wasn't issue.
Thanks all for help.
