Windows 2008 R2 VSS Issue (with Acronis, Arcserve and Exchange 2010)

Hello,

I am attempting to run a system state backup on a Windows 2008 R2 DC but It fails with the following error (in Event manager) :
Event ID : 13
Source : VSS
Volume Shadow Copy Service information: The COM Server with CLSID {5fc845eb-f299-40f0-9725-34045f7ea8ba} and name HWPRV cannot be started. [0x80070005, Access Denied

Arcserve has the same problem with VSS.

I checked the COM+ Event System, VSS, Microsoft Software Shadow copy provider Services and they seem to be in a normal state (started).

I ran :
vssadmin list writers, I received 'no error' everywhere
vssadmin list providers, I received the following (in French because of my server language) :

vssadmin 1.1 - Outil ligne de commande d'administration du service
de cliché instantané de volume
(C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.

Fournisseur : 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
   Type de fournisseur : Système
   ID du fournisseur : {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5}
   Version : 1.0.0.7

Fournisseur : 'Acronis VSS HW Provider'
   Type de fournisseur : Matériel
   ID du fournisseur : {f5dbcc43-b847-494e-8083-f030501da611}
   Version : 1.0

I ran "vssadmin create shadow /for:c:' with no error

Here I must precise, I tried a few days ago to install ACRONIS Server 9.7 with no success. It failed before the end of setup asking me to restart the server then to try again.
But now, I've got the "VSS Acronis Provider" service started and I can't uninstall the software because it's not installed !

I also installed Microsoft Exchange 2010 but for the moment the post installation tasks are not done because I want to solve my VSS issue and make a correct backup before continuing.

If you have an idea for me ?

Please note that I also tried to add full access permissions for all users to the following regkey :

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSS

But it didn't change anything to my problem.

Disable Windows VSS Service and start Acronis VSS. It substituted your Microsoft VSS by Acronis one and thus till you make it run (acronis one) you will get these errors.

Thanks for your answer noxcho,

but I've already unsinstalled ACRONIS VSS.

I removed it from COM+ Components : Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Component Services -> Computers -> My Computer -> COM+ Applications --> Acronis VSS Provider

then I removed it from the registry : http://kb.acronis.com/content/1620

When I type "vssadmin list providers", only "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0" remains

Actually, Arcserve is working fine with Microsoft VSS but not Windows 2008 Backup.
I have no more VSS errors in event manager.

But I don't know why Windows Backup is canceled ... !!! I willl know try to debug that even if Event manager is not very helpful: "Windows 2008 backup failed with error code '2155347997'"

In Windows Backup, I receive (sorry for the approximative translation) :
"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error" or something like that !!!

I found information regarding reset of shadow copies, I'll try that :

To overcome the I/O device error and be able to complete the backup succesfuly, you must reset the shadow copies. Here’s how to do it:
-          Press Windows Key + Pause/Break to bring up the System Properties window (or right click Computer and choose Properties or go to Control Panel, then System and Maintenance, then System).
-          On the left, click on Advanced System Settings.
-          In the next small System Properties window that appears, go to the System Protection tab.
-          On this tab, you most likely have Local Disk (C:) checked. To stop creating shadow copies, you must uncheck it and click apply.
-          Now to reset the contents of the shadow copies, you must enable it again. So put a checkmark back next to Local Disk (C:) and click OK.
Try to do the backup again. It should work now.

You're right, I was so concentrated on my VSS errors of the beginning  that i didn't see a very simple thing :

My destination disk (USB Disk) is the cause of the error. When I backup on another Disk (internal SATA), it works.

Thanks or your help.
