Adding/Setting up (trying to) Server 2008 Standard to Server 2003 Domain Controller

Everyone:

     So I have read all of this and think it's awesome that everyone is out to help everyone! I have done the adprep /forestprep and as well just about every other adprep /______ in the utility. I have NETDIAG & DCDIAG on my main DC (only have one - no replication, no other sites, nothing!) and everything passed and I mean EVERYTHING.

     But still I am unable to attach my brand spank'en new MS Windows 2008 R2 (x64) Server to my existing domain and continue to receive the following error message :

                   "To install a domain controller into this Active Directory forest, you must first prepare the forest use "adprep /forestprep". The Adprep utility is available on the Windows Server 2008 R2 installation media in the \support\adprep folder"

                                                                        Then I press OK

When I look at the 'Domain Level' in Active Directory Users & Computers by right clicking on my domain name 'm**it.dal.local' it shows 'Windows Server 2003'. When I check it under 'AD Sites & Services' it shows the same exact thing!! Let me point out for just a second that EVERYONE within the organization is working just fine for login, password resets, VPN, everything! However when I go to any work station, open up a Command Prompt and type in 'gpresult' (in Windows XP) or 'gpresult /r' (in Windows 7 or Server 2008) it is showing ' Domain Type : Windows 2000'

         A.) I'm assuming why I'm having such difficulties and B.) Why I am unable to add this 2008 box to my current environment.

Could any one out there PLEASE help me!! ??

You have to run the adprep in your current domain.

run /forestprep on your schema master and /domainprep on your infrastructure master

In your production domain  can you download adfind  http://www.joeware.net/freetools/tools/adfind/index.htm
run

adfind -sc schver

47 = 2008 R2
44 = 2008
31 = W2K3 R2
30 = W2K3

...just want to see what version you are at

Thanks
Mike
....and if you are using 2008 R2 and your current DCs are 32 bit (assume they are)

Then you will be using adprep32
Have you run ADPREP on the CORRECT DCs?

Are you CERTAIN you've run ADPREP from the correct 2008 version/DVD?

To elaborate (as per Dan Petri's article here: http://www.petri.co.il/windows-server-2008-adprep.htm ):
ADPREP /forestprep must be run on the Schema Master of a forest and under the credentials of someone in the Schema Admins and Enterprise Admins groups.

ADPREP /domainprep must be run on the Infrastructure Master of a domain and under the credentials of someone in the Domain Admins group.

And as to the correct version, 2008 and 2008 R2 are different versions with different ADPREPs.  If you are trying to install a 2008 R2 server and running ADPREP of a 2008 DVD (non-R2) you are not preparing the directory properly.

logon to a domain controller or open  users and computer snap in, and give us details about

"Domain Functional Level" and "Forest Functional Level"
you can find this by:
while in Active Director Users and Computers snapin, right click on your domain name and select properties, should be on the general tab.

cheers
mkline71: is right you need run the correct version of adprep from correct DC

    The link and application you asked me to download and run is a Virus, please check your sources!!

****
Gateway Anti-Virus Service. The System Administrator has been notified of this action. Name: (Cloud Id: 4888821) MalUAgent.MIP (Trojan)
****
The link Mike provide doesn't contain a virus I have download about 30 times without issues. Your system is giving you a false postive.
Leew:

     I only have 1 DC and have used the original Microsoft CD on that server that installed the software to begin with and have looked for the adprep and ran it on that box 'adprep /prepareforest'

     I am also logged in and running the command prompt as my admin account (not my administrator account) but I have my own admin account .... example: mynameadmin and have receive the following message in the command prompt ...

     'Running Domainprep' .... than it skips a few lines and than says 'Domain-Wide information has already been updated'

     Please see the screen shot I attached name 'screenshot_of_adprep_slash_domainprep.jpg' for clarification. :)

Please read this to make sure.

Just to add to the above here is an article on changes in adprep on Windows 2008 Server R2.

     I have checked, double checked, triple checked and everything and it is correct. I have attached a screen shot of what I see when I right click on my domain and choose 'Raise my Domain Level'.

Thanks.

To Everyone:

     I have attached a screen shot when I run gpresult /r in a command window and in there is where it shows me that I am running a Windows 2000 Environment ....

nazirahmed:

    I have and used the original Microsoft CD that was used to set the server up almost 2 years ago.

Good Thought though :)

Just doing the prep won't allow you to update your functional level, has the server been promoted.

Just to continue what Darius said.  Adfind is definitely not a virus; over 100,000 downloads  http://blog.joeware.net/2010/08/06/2087/

Joe is one of the top AD exerts around

...but you can also check your schema version manually http://portal.sivarajan.com/2010/03/active-directory-schema-version.html

Thanks

Mike
MKLINE71:

     I was able to get around the Virus alert, download, and run your program. Below is an attached screen shot of what I received via the command window.

Thanks

ok your schema is still at 2003 R2

Let's backup

1.  You ran adprep /forestprep on your schema master >> were  you using adprep from the 2008 media?

...are you trying to go to 2008 or 2008 R2?
MKLINE71:

     Yes & No, I ran 'adprep' from my original 2003 Server disc which I used originally to install the OS. I am trying to add a 2008 R2 Server to my domain environment and then promote the 2008 R2 as the master dc once I get replication all set up.

Make sense?

mkline71:

      That did it, I allowed it to do it's thing and run, it completed, and now I was able to add my 2008 Box to my 2003 Domain Environment.

 Thanks for the help! :)
