We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 server, every second day we get a message on the screen &quot;why did your computer shutdown unexpectedly?&quot;<br />

It is - as if the server was rebooted, without a proper shutdown. &nbsp;However, the event-viewer does not show any shutdown event, and programs left open, are still open behind this window.<br />

I gathered that the server did not actually reboot, but that some event caused a &quot;fake&quot; reboot.<br />
<br />
The server was fine along and this problem started to occur about a week ago.<br />
<br />
It seems to occur any time of day. &nbsp;And as a result some services won't start up, and we have to do a physical reboot to get the services back online again.<br />
<br />
We established that the problem is not hardware related, as it is a virtual server running on HyperV and that other servers are running just fine, without any such events.<br />
<br />
Any help will be appreciated.<br />

Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, based on the Microsoft Vista codebase, is the last 32-bit server operating system released by Microsoft. It has a number of versions, including including Foundation, Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, Web, HPC Server, Itanium and Storage; new features included server core installation and Hyper-V.

Windows Server 2008

Microsoft server applications are those applications developed specifically, but not necessarily exclusively, on the Windows Server platform. In addition to well-known products like SQL Server, Exchange, Internet Information Services (IIS), Microsoft Dynamics, Forefront, Lync and Sharepoint, they include applications like Skype, BizTalk, Hyper-V, Groove and Commerce Server. Server applications are managed with the Microsoft System Center.

Microsoft Server Apps

Microsoft Virtual Server was a virtualization solution that facilitated the creation of virtual machines on the Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003 operating systems. Virtual machines are created and managed through a web-based interface that relies on Internet Information Services (IIS) or through a Windows client application tool called VMRCplus. Features included Linux guest operating system support, Virtual Disk Precompactor, symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), x64 host operating system support, the ability to mount virtual hard drives on the host machine and additional operating systems support, including Windows Vista, and a volume shadow copy writer.
