Windows Server 2008 R2 - why did your computer shutdown unexpectedly

Hi Guys,

We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 server, every second day we get a message on the screen "why did your computer shutdown unexpectedly?"

It is - as if the server was rebooted, without a proper shutdown.  However, the event-viewer does not show any shutdown event, and programs left open, are still open behind this window.

I gathered that the server did not actually reboot, but that some event caused a "fake" reboot.

The server was fine along and this problem started to occur about a week ago.

It seems to occur any time of day.  And as a result some services won't start up, and we have to do a physical reboot to get the services back online again.

We established that the problem is not hardware related, as it is a virtual server running on HyperV and that other servers are running just fine, without any such events.

Any help will be appreciated.
Regards, Rupert
