DNS Name Issue
Hey everyone,
I have a slight problem on my Active Directory DNS Server. For some reason if the name of a computer is SCSjgyl1rr-D it gives me an error message on joining the domain however, if my computer name is something like IS00. It can join fine. It seems the length of the computer name for DNS is to long. How do i fix this ?

What is the error you are getting?
dashes are fine.
search AD to see if that PC account already exists
search AD to see if that PC account already exists
can you look in the event log on the PC and server to see if there's any indication what the error is.
Posting the actual error message you're getting would also be good. That name doesn't look too long, here's a page with info on limitations:

The error states it cant get a response back from the DNS server. However, i took the -d out of the name and it connects fine to the domain.
Post an ipconfig /all
Make sure the client is only pointing to Domain Controllers for DNS

The error points to you not pointing to internal DNS servers like your Domain Controllers in your TCP\IP properties. Please post the ipconfig /all
I avoid using dashes but I guess that's a personal choice.
I tend to avoid them as I run into some problems running MS Access.
So I begun using " _ " instead. I know dashes work in most cases (and they should),
but it's me who's distrustful. Some routers also tend to have problems with dashes...

like posted before, check the network settings and post the ipconfig /all from both the client and server

The DNS on my IP Config all is pointed to the DNS server. If that was the problem it wouldnt connect without the -d. Thats not the problem. Its the "-d " . However i dont understand why the "-" is an issue.

have you ever used that name in your active directory before and removed it? if so there may be remnants that could be removed using ADSI edit.
You didnt do something daft by accident and use a space befroe the dash? I know iv'e done such things in the past
So you change the PC Name to SCSjgyl1rr-D and Reboot.

Neilsr yes. the -d is what throws it.
when you join the domain are you using the NetBIOS name or DNS name? try using dns name.
yeah, when joining make sure you are using domain.local
