Hey. I have a large amount of memory on the server. How do I distribute it to another partition on the VM server?
It is split into three servers. Two 2003 and one 2008.

I think Vsphere. The server screen says VMware esxi 4.0.0.
I do not have access to the server right now.

As you create virtual machines you can add vRAM and Hard Drives to the VM. You can over allocate memory, assigning more than you have have total.

@ hanccocka. When you say the VMs needs to be off do you mean the server partitions need to be powered down? I know you log into the VN and right click the server partitions to power on or off. Just want to make sure that is what you are speaking off.
I think you mean the Virtual Machines when you say server partitions. Yes, the VM's must be shutdown. If VM tools are installed, you can right click on the VM and select Shutdown Guest. If not, you can simply shutdown the VM from the server console or and RDP session as you would a physical server (Start->Shutdown).
Thanks,
S.

To increase memory the Virtual Machine Guest Needs to be OFF, unless configured for Hot Add Memory.

@SebastianAbbinanti Yes that is the proper terminology. VM machines. Thanks. Will try it at some point and get back to this ticket.

We allocated the memory, however, now the VM machine is as super slow!!
how much memory is in the host server?
how much has been allocated total to virtual machines?
if you have over allocated, over committed, which is possible, this could cause the host to swap and slow down.

We have a total of 28 and this VM is set at 4gb "installed" with4gb virtually added via the 2003 server OS. So it is showing 8gb. there is another VM server with 20 and one with 1gb. Would the virtual memory added on the server it's self cause an issue? Should we turn that off?

The CPU shoots up and just stays really high!
ASKER
It says cpu % is 99!
how much memorynin the host?
sorry, just read your first message, so you have a total of 28GB
and youve allocated
8GB VM1
20GB VM2
1GB VM3
you have over allocated, no memory for hypervisor, its swapping to disk causing high cpu....
does vm2 need 20gb?
and youve allocated
8GB VM1
20GB VM2
1GB VM3

does vm2 need 20gb?
possiblebreduce memory in vm2 by 2GB at least so the hypervisor has some....
have you not check the Summary and Performance charts?

We have 28gb hard memory for the server.
4gb hard to VM1 and 4gb Virtual via the server OS virtual memory
20gb VM2
1gb VM3
Does the server OS virtual memory count? I am dropping VM1 to 2gb and booting backup.

Performance is what I have been checking at it shows cpu at 99%. Let's see what happens since I dropped the memory down to 2gb from 4gb.
but you should be able to also see you are overalocated on memory, using memory you do not have!
ASKER
Where would it show that?
Summary, Performance charts

see file

Click the Summary Tab?

I don't understand. I log on and logs in and then starts the shut down process??

is this what you want?

okay you have a 32GB total memory in the host server.
8 x 2GHz processors
currently its at rest, whats the issue, what are your goals?
to VMs are off.

Well right now I am trying to log into this one server and it keeps shutting down!
ASKER
I didn't even log into it I just left it at the log in screen and 5 minutes later it shutdown!
I think your original question about adding memory to virtual machines has been answered. We need to look at this new issues in a new question.
