Windows 2008R2 - NIC Teaming

I'm somewhat new at NIC teaming.  I've got a few questions I would like answered if possible.  We run vSphere 5.5, and I have just spun up a new Windows Server 2008R2 VM.  When I built it, I gave it two NICS.

1. Can I team these two NICs together from within the O/S?  If so, how and where is it done?  I have read that it can only be done via the NIC drivers but that seems ridiculous.  You can do NIC teaming fairly simply in Server 2003 so not sure why you couldn't in 2008 Server.

2.  Since this is a VM, is there going to be any sort of problems I might encounter by teaming two virtual NICS?

3. This is an Oracle production server we are building, and am I on the right track with my thinking that if I have two NICS teamed together that I am naturally going to gain network performance?  Otherwise, what is the point of assigned two virtual NICS to any VM unless you were going to assign them as two different usable interfaces to connect to.
