yes, it is the son of windows NT, it even says so on the splash screens as you boot up. and if certain microssoft execs know what they are talking about, (and I assume they do) there will only be one more upgrade to the win 9x series, then it will become like win 3.x, dead and for all practical purposes unsupported. My advice: jump in and get your feet wet. I have been running win 2000 since the beta became available. the original release was a bit rough around the edges, and lumpy, but RC2, which I have been runing for a week now, has run smooth as silk. IMHO, win 2000 is a masterful blend of the best parts of Win NT and WIN 9x. And no, I do not work for microsoft, infct, i really dont care for many of their marketing practices, but somehow, they have come up with a winner here!!!!!!!

NT5 and win2k are the same thing windows2000 professional is like nt workstation and server is server so on and so on... as far as obtaining a beta you can buy from the link below for like $30.00 or something currently it's beta 3 candidate release 2 (i'm using on this machine right now and it appears to be very stable at least compared to beta 2,3 and 3 candidate release 1...
Also if you have any MCSE friend they should get it with their monthly technet subscription in the beta pack...
