Question

Win2K with SP1 : problem with explorer

Asked by: brainwash

Hi,

Sometimes when i select all the contents of the right pane and do a right click (because i want to delete/copy/move/properties/...) I immediately get an error (dump file is created and explorer is closed).  Restarting explorer and doing the same actions on the same folder gives the same problem.

Is this a known problem and if yes, is there a solotion availaible.

Thought this would be solved with SP1 but it isn't.

Greetings,

Jan Vandekerckhove

Did you install any shell extension that might cause this error? Check the registry entries in 'HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers', i assume the culprit can be found there... The quickest 'test' IMHO would be to rename the key, e.g. 'shellex.0' (or better: The CLSIDs of the handlers entered there), restart the shell and see what's happening (CAVEAT - as ever: backup your registry before manually changing the settings ;-)

jkr,

First of all thank you for you comment.

I tried this, but it doesn't seem to solve the problem.

Something I forgot to say in my problem description : I don't have this for all directories, only on particular ones.

One little question though : is it normal that when I reenter regedit that it opens where I did the last change ?

Greetings,

Jan

I'm guessing that as jkr said there is some bogus contextmenuhandler somewhere for one of the files that you are selecting in the group (since win will look at each files contextmenuhandler out of a group of selected files and possibly load it if it applies to the group), but not a problem with the * context handler, just with one of the specific files.

So try to reproduce the problem with a specific file selected and then delete that extenstions context handler
OR
search throughout your resgistry for "contextmenuhandlers" for one that "looks bad" or you don't need anymore.  Yes this will probably take awhile but its the only thing that I can think of.

All,

It took a while since I replied because the problem seems to have disappeard now.  However directly after jkr's solution the problem still occured.  Now it's gone.

I don't know what has solved the problem know.  I think jkr's deserves the points?

To all others,
Thanks !
