Save As Slow typing in file name

On windows 2000, when using any of the office 2000 products and trying to save to a network drive, the file name is slow appearing when you type it in.  But if i save to C when i type the filename, the letters appear as i type like they should.  Does anyone else have this problem?

I was searching some newsgroups and one person said Win2K uses DNS heavily and it should be "fine tuned" but didn't elaborate.  Is this a possibility?

This could be a problem if you have the DNS setup within Active Directory Services, which uses its own DNS configuration, conflicting with the regular DNS settings.
Hope this helps!

Well, we do use Active Directory.  Does anyone have anything more specific?  Where do we begin the "fine tuning" and how do we know when things are "conflicting"?  Also, has anyone had the same problem with the "save as" dialog box and typing in a new file name?
Upon re-reading your problem, I'm not so sure your problem is with DNS...  It sounds more like what happens when some machine on the network has a conflicting IP address.
Tell me more about your network... do you have any NFS or Samba mounts or anything like this?  Does your network use only TCP/IP?  How large is your network?
Hope I can help!

We have about 400 clients using TCP/IP.  Another piece of the puzzle:
I can reproduce this problem with about any Office product (Excel, Word, Access) but Microsoft Paint or WordPerfect don't have a problem.

Also, if I use the Open dialog and there is no document or folder beginning with that letter, it displays the same behavior.
This is a wild guess, but in some cases, disabling FindFast can be the solution for this kind of problems:

Use the computer for a few hours without Find Fast. If you still notice a slowdown, the problem may be caused by something else. To disable Find Fast, use the following steps:

In the Control Panel, double-click Find Fast.
On the Index menu, click Close and Stop.

Find Fast stops running until you restart the computer, or you open Find Fast again from the Control Panel.

Note: Leave Fast Start in the Startup folder. Removing it from the folder does not remove the utility. If you want to remove Find Fast, run the Microsoft Office Setup program and remove it and then reinstall Microsoft Office. Ideally it is better to disable Find Fast once it has been installed, than to remove it.

An alternative to removing Find Fast with the Setup program is to start Find Fast from the Windows Control Panel and delete any existing indices. After you do this, remove Find Fast from the Startup folder. If you delete all the existing indices, and then start Find Fast from the Startup group, Find Fast recognizes that it has nothing to index and immediately quits. Note that this process leaves orphaned index files that progressively become out of date and take up extra room on the hard disk.

Is this the same thing as QuickFinder?  It did not seem to have the same menu options.  I don't seem to have anything called FindFast (using Windows 2000 Pro).
No, Vendi.

I'll point you to this article, for precise instructions...

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q199/7/87.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0

If you don't find it, I suppose it was not installed...but that would surprise me, normally FindFast is ran and set up by default when installing Office 97 or 2000.

thanks calacuccia but it isn't one of my control panel options.  Any other suggestions?  this is really stumping me!

Open Outlook and click on the journal. Are you currently journaling anything? If you are and don't intend to, remove all checkmarks.
Avatar of Vendi

ASKER

Checked that too!  Not journaling anything.
Hit ctrl-alt-delete, Vendi. Give us a list of what's in there. Also, do you have Acrobat (not reader) installed? Do you have Visio installed?

Certain programs will install things that can interfere with normal operation.

Okay (I've seen this same question two other times in Deja discussions with no solution),  we have Altiris Client running on all workstations, and we do have Acrobat Reader as well.

Sorry, too many novice users to go with Linux.
I'm sorry too, because someone is using my name.

Compare my profile with 0kki ( My user name is Okki )

PS.  I don't know much about Linux.

It looks like they typed a zero instead of the letter O?
I know, just like I did in my comment.   = )
Anyway, that account is closed now.

Wonder who's next?
Could be anyone with an I or l (big i or small L) in their username or another user with a capital O in their username.
I don't have a suggestion but I've had the same problem w/some Corel programs.
wait - just remembered something...
it's not my strong point - we had an incompatibility within the hub which slowed down the reading of the network. I'll try and talk to my network guy tomorrow and see what he says - it had something to do w/the network card being 10/100 but the hub was HP and... I really don't remember too much. sorry.

appreciate any details you can give starl!!
just got your notif.... hope they get this fixed soon. I left a msg w/my net guy, but haven't received an answer. Was too busy to chase him down. will get more aggressive tomorrow.
maybe you can post a 0pt question linking ppl in networking to this Q..
Vendi,
I was able to reproduce the symptoms you describe.  I have only 3 machines on my network... a Win2k Advanced Server (using office 2000), a Linux-Mandrake 7.1 server, and a Win98 workstation.  I use NFS and Samba... I do not use Active Directory.
The problem appeared twice... I rebooted all three machines yesterday and have not had the problem since.
I'm trying to look into it but havent found anything yet.

thanks jdvh. we haven't been able to come up with anything yet either.
the network files/folders aren't compressed, are they?

I'm not sure.  I don't think so but I'll check on Monday.  (We used Office 2000 previous in an NT/98 environment.  It is only since our switch to Win2k that this has started up.)

I checked it on non-compressed drive, same problem.  :(
When you type the filename in, the program is searching the current directory for any matches.
I think this is known as autocomplete.
I've seen this problem before, but never got round to fixing it.
Have you tried SR-1 for Office 2000 ?
What anti-virus software do you use ?
If locally installed, is it set to protect network drives ?
Try these:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q171/4/06.ASP

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q262/5/30.ASP

The system may be trying to auto-save a linked object, maybe a graphic or something.

Do you have journalling enabled in Outlook ?

These may not seem to be related, but Office 2000 is well integrated and shares DLLs quite heavily - a problem in one app may manifest itself in another !

Vendi, talked to the network guy and this is what he told me. Our problem was caused by a network card that was not 100% compatible with the router. It was causing ppl to go server jumping when they wanted info.

ex: instead of going straight to the local server, I would go to a server at the mother company first, then to my local. I didn't see this from my station, but maybe they could see it from watching the packets at the server. This problem was not noticable till some of us went to NT - everyone else is 95.

Still no luck solving this problem.  I'd like to close this question.  Any preferences whether I should delete it or split points?

tim, thanks for your tenacity!  We do have sr-1 for office and journaling is not turned on.  We are looking into find fast.  Although, it is currently disabled, we are checking to see if an existing index is being used.  Where did you come up with that article?  thanks again!
>tim, thanks for your tenacity!

Can't let it get away !

Have you checked up about the anti-virus stuff ?

Not yet on the anti-virus but I passed your complete comment higher up.  I'll be sure to mention it when I get the chance.

Well, I printed out a copy of your response and gave it to my boss.  He tried each thing that you suggested.  No change!  We are still experiencing the slowness.  Any more suggestions?
That was my last ditch attempt...
Do you find this problem occurs with a fresh build of Windows 2000, SP-1, Office 2000, SR-1, with NOTHING else installed (bar networking, of course)?
