It was the DNS entries that did it. I had already added the domain controller to the lmhosts and the hosts files. I had both our internet server and the domain server set up in the DNS. As soon as I removed all DNS entries, it was able to become part of the domain.

I never would have guessed it had anything to do with DNS cause I always associated DNS with the Internet and not an internal network...

Try add remove any DNS entries in network property, and Edit C:\%systemroot%\system32\d rivers\etc \lmhosts and hosts file, add an entry as
DOMAINNAME IPADDRESS
in both files.
