We have a network with at Windows NT 4 Server (sp6a). Protocols used: IPX/SPX, TCP/IP, and NetBEUI... The server is on separate LAN with Cisco Router between. I can set up win95/98 machines to login to both our Novell network (one side of router) and the NT domain (other side of router) without any problems. We are starting to test out Windows 2000 Pro as client machines. My machine (win2k) was originally set up to be a member of a workgroup. It uses Novell's client for win2k ver. 4.8 and is not having any troubles. I want this machine to also log into the NT domain so I can control some software that requires the machine to be part of the domain. Whenever I try to change the machine from the workgroup to the domain in the "Advanced... Network Identification" menu of the network properties, it immediately responds with the error "The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted". There isn't even a blib on the network monitor to indicate it is even attempting to look for the domain!
The strange thing is, I can map drives to the server, I can run the user administrator/Server administrator, etc. programs and change to the domain without any problems.
Like i said, win95/98 machines are no problem. I could change them back and forth from the workgroup only and the login to a domain till I'm blue in the face, but I can't get this win2k machine to switch to the domain...
Hopefully, this is enough information, but ask for more if you need to...

It was the DNS entries that did it. I had already added the domain controller to the lmhosts and the hosts files. I had both our internet server and the domain server set up in the DNS. As soon as I removed all DNS entries, it was able to become part of the domain.

I never would have guessed it had anything to do with DNS cause I always associated DNS with the Internet and not an internal network...

Try add remove any DNS entries in network property, and Edit C:\%systemroot%\system32\d
DOMAINNAME IPADDRESS
in both files.
