Question

PacketCD/Win2K

Asked by: Nathalie

Hi all:
My problem is as follows. In my PC, I have Win98 and Win2000 installed on two primary partitions, respectively. Other partitions are "common", since they are visible under both systems. Under Win98 WinOnCd and PacketCD installed for use with the Philips CDD3600 are running OK. Under Win2K WinOnCD (upgraded for use with W2K) runs OK, while PacketCD refuses to upgrade, since it doesn't see the installation of the W98 version: though it is on one of "common" partitions, it isn't registered by Win2K. Would be grateful for help in finding solution.

PacketCd can´t see the installation, because it can´t find regarding keys in the registry or maybe an *.ini in the system root.

suggestions:
don´t use packedCd in Win2k (my opinion) you have more trouble than use with it. Win2k can read the packedCD out of the box (written with win98).

if you must have it, install the older version in win2k or try to install it and then upgrade it before rebooting the system.

Franka, the problem is that the older version of PacketCD refuses to install under Win2k since it recognizes it as NT and quits after a message "this version will not run under WinNT" and the upgrade quits since it does not see the older version installed under Win98.

You should run the Application Compatibility tool (in the original Win2k CD under \Support\Apcompat.exe) before you install PacketCD.

Ce-Quadrat have an upgrade available on their website http://www.cequadrat.com/english/support/list_servicepacks_e.html

Portang: thanks, I'll try Apcompat.exe.
Jamess03: the upgrade (just that one from Cequadrat.com) quits since it does not see the older version which is installed from under Win98  and isn't registered by Win2k (see above...)

Portang, I have succeeded in installing the older version using Ampcompat.exe, but the upgrade still doesn't recognize the presence of an older version and quits...

Thanks.
But wondering did you installed the Win98 version or the NT version of PacketCD ?

> PacketCD refuses to upgrade
Were you trying to install the DirectCD upgrade that replaces existing PacketCD from :
http://www.cequadrat.com/driver/3.x/DCD-PCD_301e-1.exe

Based on CeQuadrat WebSite:
This patch will upgrade OEM and Power Edition users of Packet-CD with Windows 2000 to Direct-CD 3.01e. Please be aware you will no longer have the use of Packet-CD

Looks like under Win2000 there is only one good packet writer, the DirectCD from Adaptec. See if you can get a copy of EasyCD Creator and apply the upgrade!

by: NathaliePosted on 2000-10-11 at 05:02:01ID: 4672821

Portang:
It's the Win98 version.
Well, I have both Easy CD creator and Direct CD since they came with the Philips CDR drive. Both programs were running nice under Win95, but after I upgraded to Win98 I was unable to burn a CD without errors. Therefore I wanted to get rid of
Adaptec programs.

O.K.  It seems there are two updrade paths:

1) PacketCD  -->> DirectCD 3.01
2) DirectCD 2.5 -->> DirectCD 3.01

They all ends up the same !  Your best bet probably is to :

1) Remove PacketCD first.
2) Install  DirectCD from software bundle.
3) Upgrade DirectCD to 3.01d.

by: PortangPosted on 2000-10-11 at 05:59:25ID: 4674001

DirectCD 3.01 really works great in Win2000 !

Okay, I'll try. Thanks!
