Question

opening .html in New windows

Asked by: jenniferx

Hi everyone,

I recently got a new computer with Windows Me.  I do some web design, so obviously I would be saving some .html documents on my hard drive, right?  When I want to open one of these documents off my computer (rather than a link off the internet), I double-click on whatever.html, and it opens in the same window as an already open netscape window.  This is incredibly frustrating.

Sometimes i will want to open up 5 html documents off my hard drive all at once.  With win 98, i would just select them all, then right-click and select 'open.'  Then 5 brand-spankin-new netscape windows would open up for me.  With win me, it opens up the first document for a second(inside of a window that i was previously viewing), then it will open up the 2nd document right on top of the first one...etc.  this is incredibly stupid.

Can someone tell me how to shut this off?  Thanks so much.  sorry for my ranting.

jennifer.

jennifer,

When you go to open the .html file, hold down the Shift key and then click the right mouse button.  Choose the option that says "open with", and then select your Netscape browser.  This should open a new window.

I realize that this is a work-around solution, but it should get you going.  I will keep looking for a permanent way to open all .html files in a new window.  I know it can be done.

Cheers

Actually, here is an easier way:

Simply hold down Shift and double-click on the .html file.  As long as the same .html file is not already open, it will launch a new browser window.

This seems like the best and easiest solution to me.  If it's an .html file that is not yet open, use shift-double-click.  If you already have the same .html file opened, then use shift, right-click, open with, browser name.

This works every time for me.  I am using Internet Explorer, but this seems to be a Windows issue rather than a browser issue, so it should work with Netscape as well.

Thank you ekestes,

I'm still not sure what's up.  Bummer, I did what you said to try (both suggestions), and it still didn't work!  So I deleted .htm and .html from my regedit...so that windows would have to ask me what application i wanted to use to open those types of files...

when i double-clicked on an .html document, it asked me "open with..." and i picked IE.  now it works fine, even without holding down the shift key!  I can live with IE for now, at least for when i want to open a bunch of pages.

Can you think of anything else?  it's strange that we're not having the same experiences with the same operating system.  it almost makes me think that there is some option in the win me preferences that would control this.

Well, i am content if we can't find anything...  If not, i'll reward your points and move on!

thanks so much
jennifer.

p.s. when i tried the "open with" option (with the shift key), it does open a new window if i pick IE, but not for Netscape.  This is discrimination, right?  ;)

jennifer,

Yes, it looks like discrimination against Netscape!  (This wouldn't be a first for microsoft!)

There might be a setting in Netscape that allows you to always open new pages in new windows.  You might try searching through the various settings and options.

Still, it seems to me like it should be a Windows setting.  The operating hasn't passed control to the program until it has opened, one would think.  But Windows is quirky.  You never know!

I will let you know if I run across anything else.
