IIS5.0 & NDIS problem

My IIS service hangs after issuing an iisrestart service occasinally. The error shown in event viewer is : the service could not bind instance X, where X is the number of websites hosted on my IIS. Error code 115.

Does anyone have any idea why. I know its associated with the NIC since when this happens you can't ping the website as the IIS websites were not bound to the NIC.

Only recovoury method is to reboot at the moment.

Patching SP2 is not an acceptable answer !!

It sound like the IIS couldn't open the necessary port.
Can you please check with a netstat -a if the port is still used?

I would also get the Newest NIC drivers, snce you are not willing to try SP2 yet.

SP2 already installed but problem still exist. That's why I won't accept patching SP2 as an answer. The server is using the latest drivers from HP.

YOu say that you cannot even ping the server when this happens? In this case I'd suspect no IIS problem at all, but a hardware or driver problem. Are any other network services still available when this happens?

Oh, I didn't read the whole question.
If the IIS is down, the IP should of course be still pingable.

Hi all,

I wasn't there when the thing happend so I can't answer the questions at the moment (it was in the middle of the night when the duty engineer woke me up - it usually is!).

Anyway I told them to check all the suggestions you all have kindly gave me and we are waiting for the problem to recur to see if we can check it. The problem is we have only a short time to do all this as we have ensure the machine is up straight away when such things happens.

Will update when I have more info

Remember that it is important to repatch SP2 after any hardware  or software changes, including driver updates !!!

you don't have to reapply any SP for Win2k after OS config changes

Franka is right if the SP2 was applied from ther Network package (the one with >100MB size). However, if you installed the Express version (500k+whatever is needed), I think it would be a good idea to reapply SP2 since the Express setup does only download and installed needed components, and thus may be missing parts of the stuff for the new hardware/software installed.

SP2 Network was applied. Funny thing is the problem has not occured since I posted this on EE. Is the machine afraid of all the experts at EE ?? :)

How do I split the points for multiple answers ?
Although the problem has not recurred, I feel the answers given are pertinent and helpfull, I am feeling generous as well at the moment :)

You can ask CS (community support) to split points, or just post new "Points for xxx"-Q's if you have points to spare... ;-)
