Question

Installing Windows 2000

Asked by: Ruddi

I have recently managed to crash Windows ME and I think I will try to install Windows 2000. What is the best way to do, whitout formatting the drive? (I have files left I don't want to delete)

Is Windows 2000 more stable than ME?

I use my computer to surf Internet (Paying my bills) and playing games. Is Windows 2000 for me?

Do I need Service pack 1 and 2 for Windows 2000? I have a Swedish version of Windows 2000 but an English version of SP2, can I use it?

Is Windows 2000 more stable than ME ?
Yes, the NTFS in WINDOWS 2000 handles program started in Windows 2000 in different memory buffers, hence, it prevents a single program crash making the whole system hang like WIN9X or ME. and also because of the memory buffers are allocated differently, the switching of programs has become faster.

The internet function in Windows 2000 is nothing much different, but ofcourse, it's network capability is excellent compared to WIN9X or ME.

For games, Windows 200 has becoming more and more considerables for Game developer. Most of the games now support NT environment. (Not for old one, ofcos)

It is better update your WIN2K with the same language SP to avoid language conflict.

The best way to do for Installing Windows 2000 with all your WinME info retained:

1. Backup all your files into another HD having FAT32 file type, (E.g. WIN98 / WIN ME OS harddisk)

2. Feel free to format your target harddisk into NTFS for WINDOWS 2000.

3. Plug back the backuped harddisk and use the WINDOWS 2000 freshly installed harddisk to boot. And now you are able to see your backkup HD in your Windows Explorer, u can copy back what ever you want.

NOTE:

Only WINDOWS 2000 can see WIN9X / WIN Me, BUT
WIN9X / WIN Me can't see files in WINDOWS 2000.
(means NTFS can access FAT32, but FAT32 can't access NTFS)

Hope it helps.

Cheers.

I have recently managed to crash Windows ME and I think I will try to install Windows 2000. What is
the best way to do, whitout formatting the drive? (I have files left I don't want to delete)

It is advisable to backup all you file first before installation. Win2000 is not an upgrade version of win98. Installing win2000 will remove win me or it will use an os loader to load to os alternatively. But you can use aprtition magic to partition a small portion of your hdd and transfer files to the new partition. Now proceed with the installation. You dont have to format the winme partiton. During installation you will have the option to format it to win2000 automatically

Is Windows 2000 more stable than ME?

Yes definately. less crashes better stablilty is the word to describe win2000. NTFS provide better security in file managmeent as the memory management is better as a result less crashes.

I use my computer to surf Internet (Paying my bills) and playing games. Is Windows 2000 for me?

Win2000 ius mend for profesional use, while win mer is for home user. In terms of harware requirement, win 2000 definately takes up alot of resources, while palying game you might feel the difference
