Question

No-frill domain setup for hands-on

Asked by: simala

I want to practice W2K client/server with just 2 PCs and I don?t have an internet domain name. I found the domain setup is different than NT and I failed. The W2K server was installed as Workgroup thinking that it was easy to finish the installation sooner and later on I could change it into domain anyway.

In NT, I can setup the domain name w/o connecting the server to the workstation. And I don?t have to instal DNS server. Can I do the same with W2K server?

I wonder if someone could help me ? my priority at the moment is to connect 2 PCs, one as a server, the other as a workstation, using domain not workgroup as simple as possible. Please be specific.

If you are only connecting 2 systems, why do you need a client/Server setup?

by: simalaPosted on 2001-11-19 at 07:23:19ID: 6641886

to MICS:
Just to setup like what I did with NT --- NT server as a domain controller and NT workstation as a client of a domain.
I would like to connect more, but at the moment I only have 2 PCs at home and I don't think workgroup setup will give me the hands-on I need.

You CAN setup internal domain with no problem just run from command line IN THE SERVER : DCPROMO
And you can install a domain with any name you want.
Just please make sure that those 2 machines connected only between them (for not causing any problems in your local lan , if you have one.)

when setiing up a server run DCpromo from the run command. follow the instructions, its fairly straight forward.

not the setup will fail if your NIC is not connected to another computer or hub. as for DNS, windows 2000 active directory requires that DNS be installed. the DCPROMO wizard will install it for you.

I think I failed because the server had no connection when I run the AD Installation wizard. I will try tomorrow and get back to you.
