Question

Win2k pro setup stalls

Asked by: wanda

Trying to install Win2k pro,... it gets to the part where it says

"Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration..."

and that's it,  it won't go any farther.
I want to do the dual boot with 98se, I've tried starting the setup from
98se and also booting from CD,
both stop at the same place.

Would appreciate any Help.

Hmm just a thought. Try taking out all your cards (Sound Blaster Live, 2 NIC cards, DVD, CD) and see if the setup will work then. If it does then start putting the cards back in one at a time.

Whenever I've seen this problem I would do what Cazyone implied but only a bit differently. I would go into the bios and set it to setup defaults first, then attempt to install before removing cards. Then if that didn't work I would remove all the cards, see if Windows 2k would load and then put them in one at a time and install the drivers for them.

This is really wierd, I'm surprised 2k is so particular.

I took out 1 of the NIC's, still would not go,
so I took out the sound card, then it was OK, it installed great, also installed sp2, 4in1 VIA-MB drivers, directX8, video and other drivers, restarting it many times,
so I shut it down and put back in the NIC and sound,
now it hangs if I select win2000 instead of 98se.
I did not put them back in 1 at a time, so I will try that.

Both NIC's are back in and working fine, but it still will not boot win2000 with the SB live in the computer. ????

Sound Blaster live has 1 jumper on it, I switched it and still won't go.
BIOS is set for Plug'n'Play OS.
I changed BIOS to defaults, still nothing.

this sound card is only a few months old, it's the only hardware I have that actually came with drivers for win 2000.

Your motherboard does not appear on the Hardware Compatibility List for Win2K at http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/ which basically means that Win2K does not support it.

There may be a BIOS update for the motherboard available from Abit, but seeing as how the board doesn't show up on the HCL, my guess is that you are out of luck.

Also, more bad news is that the ATI All In Wonder 128 Rage video card is not supported under Win2K either.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Not having a problem with the MB, abit has a driver for win2k and it's installed. I checked on the BIOS update, it doesn't look like it would help my situation;

1-Fixes the unstable issue with the mouse under Window95.
2-Increases the stability of SDRAMs.
3-Fixes the compatibility issue with the Matrox G400 AGP Card.
4-Fixes the compatibility issue with the SCSI Cards.

No problem with ATI video card either, have installed win2k drivers for it.

I forgot list above that I also have a PCI - USR 56k modem.
That's 5 PCI cards, should that make any difference?
it doesn't for 98SE.

I switched the cards around and finally got it started up with all 5 in there, But it's acting very strange.
it freezes for about 2-3 seconds, then works for a second, then freezes again, off & on like that, ...it's not usable.

would it help if I replaced 1 card with an ISA?
I have 6 PCI slots, 1 is shared with an ISA.

Last, I flashed the BIOS to the newest. no help.

That sounds like an IRQ conflict problem. Can you get into device manager and change the IRQ that the sound card is using?

Taking the cards out did solve the problem of installing the OS.
I think the main problem was a faulty motherboard.
I also tried installing winXP, it acted the same.
after I asked if it would help to replace one PCI for an ISA, I put in an ISA old SBlaster 16 and it worked just fine untill yesterday, my monitor just went blank, the motherboard completely died.
Thanks all!
