It could also be a hardware problem on the ps/2 connector or port, on the computer itself.
I hope this helps !

Browse All TopicsI am in the process of setting up a small lab for an MCSE course (Network Infrastructure). I set this lab up for various courses on a regular basis using Win2k Advanced Server evaluation copies, which is what I was doing this time as well.
After doing 10 computers with no problem, I ran into problems with the instructor computer. When I got to the screen in the installation process where you type your Name and Organization, my shift keys weren't working. One shift key (the left) thinks it's a tab, but not always the same - pressing it repeatedly causes it to jump back and forth between options, but not in a consistent pattern. The right shift key thinks it's an "a" - sometimes uppercase, sometimes lowercase, again no pattern. All the other keys seem to be fine. I backed up a bit in the installation to check the regional options (language, keyboard, etc), and everything is still set to US English.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

I'm rather embarrassed to say that Eric was right. I've been dealing with relatively complicated problems all week and didn't recognize a simple problem when I saw it. I don't know why the keyboard stopped working properly since that computer hasn't been used since the last course, but nobody said these things always make sense.
The "Accept Comment as Answer" link has been bringing up an error page all day, which is why we (my boss and I) didn't close this yet. Sorry to all of you and especially to Eric - we'll keep trying to get the points to you.
