The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

Problem with updating applications to new versions

This one is really strange!  Running 2-win2k boxes on home (local) network using D-link 530tx niks through d-link DI-704P router and using cable modem. Problem is with #1 machine which is Athlon 700, 60gig h/d w/512mb mem on Asus K7v mobo.

The problem: Every time I try and upgrade or update to newer version of an application that needs to connect to the web I get an unable to connect error when trying to connect.  The latest problem is with WS_FTP pro from version 7.04 to 7.05.  I get connect failed error.  I get similar errors when trying to use newer versions of ICQ, Get Right and it even happened when I tried installing the sp3 upgrade!  On roll-back to prior versions of all 4 with the exception of ws-ftp pro the pre-install versions work just fine. (I already had all the updates for win2k prior to trying the sp3 and using the roll-back option worked just fine so nothing lost there anyway!)

I thought it might be the hardware firewall in the router but bypassing the router and going directly to the cable modem (a Motorola SB4100 Surfboard)but that had no effect so I have discounted any problems with the router.

This problem has only occured with apps that need to access the web to operate....I'm really stumped! I even tried d/l'ing a couple of other ftp pgm's but am getting the same results.  Help please! where do I look to fix this problem?
