Question

W2K & IE￿

Asked by: StoneG

System: P3 933, 512 RDRAM, GB's of free space, current virus-free, dual-boot WinME/Win2K Pro.
I have a personal web site through my ISP that I created with MS Publisher 2000.
It's a combo of text, jpg's, gif's, & hypertext links.
Nobody has ever had any trouble accessing this site.
While logged in under Win2K I discovered that I was unable to access the home page with a direct link.
All I can get is a completely blank page [& no source]
If I directly link to page 3 or 4 then I get all of the text & links but still no graphics or page background & the links are there for the other pages which show only text & links, also.
I was using IE 5.0 for both boots, but upgraded to IE 5.5 under Win2k to see if that would help.
The only thing that was done to the W2K was an install of Diablo 2 before I noticed the prob.
WinME boot allows full & total access to the site.
My ISP says they find no problem with the site.
I've looked at basic IE options & find nothing wrong.
I can't find anything in W2K to cause this but it HAS to be the cause.
What the...??

have you tried the IE repair tool from Add/Remove Programs?

in your separate OS installations, you are using different instances of internet explorer.

how about a link to the site?

by: heheman3000Posted on 2002-09-14 at 06:05:41ID: 7280524

Have you tried entering the IP address of the site and seeign what happens?

by: StoneGPosted on 2002-09-14 at 14:54:37ID: 7281759

I updated IE 5.0 to 5.05 under W2K...no diff
Each install of IE was made with the individual o/s install.
I'll try the repair, but I expect that the update would have done that.
The link is good. I actually cut and pasted it into a Word doc so that it would be identical from either o/s. Works in ME...no works in W2K.
I haven't tried entering the IP. I'll give that a try when I'm in W2K.

excuse me for what I will say but FrontPage is one of the worst programs on earth to make pages. Probably the problem is associated to all the crap FP puts on source code of page, that does only 3 things:

1) makes the page bigger
2) is completely useless
3 increases the chances the page not be viewed properly.

The solution you will have is to try cleaning the crap on the code manually or find some program to clean it. I know that there is some shareware to do it.

:-)

Have you tried completely cleaning out the temp. file cache? Does it work when you log onto another user's profile on the 2K machine?

>>I have a personal web site through my ISP that I created with MS Publisher 2000>>

And therein lies the problem. I suspect that ME has enough of the images/pages in the cache so that it loads before it times out. Win2K doesn't.

Publisher is even WORSE than FP -- the pages are literally 10 times larger than they need to be, and full of completely unnecessary nested tables. Often there are so many nested tables that it crashes the browser or fails to display at all.

Publisher is a PRINT program. Not a web one. NO print program does even marginally useful web pages.

by: StoneGPosted on 2002-09-17 at 20:15:19ID: 7287261

This is a free personal site supplied by my ISP & doesn't seem to have a unigue IP address. Ping calls an invalid address.
Not surprised. There's a ~ in the address.

Cache has been emptied in both IE's.
No diff.
The load takes about 5-10 seconds for both the successful & blank page loads.

Nobody is having any problems with this site except me...and that happens only when logged in under W2K.
MS Pub MAY be bottom line but the site works just fine for everybody 'cept me & W2K. Other W2K's see it fine.

I would prefer not to go totally public with my site at this time. It's primarily to share my photo art with my peers. [no, it ain't porno, you freeks! :p ]
I will cut & paste the home page source code when I have a few minutes.
Thanx, folks!

is the page straight HTML???  most likely it's not at all. it will have some proprietary MS code as mentioned regarding the software above.

this might sound irrelevant but do this.
in windows 2000
1) download the latest video driver
2) uninstall your video driver completely
3) reboot and install the new driver
4) install (or reinstall) the latest direct X drivers.

You DO have the right permissions to access the internet in Win2K, right? You can get other sites, download files, etc.?

by: webwomanPosted on 2002-09-18 at 16:38:51ID: 7290002

But regardless, the bottom line IS Publisher. I suspect you're not the only person having problems with it, just that nobody else said anything.

I have OFTEN run into sites done in Publisher that are EXTREMELY flakey -- sometimes they show up, someetimes they don't, sometimes the come up when you first go to them and not afterward, sometimes they don't come up until you refresh, etc. It's all because the code is SO BAD that the browser gets confused. And they often don't come up for Netscape AT ALL.

But of course, this is all moot, since we don't have code OR a link to check.

by: StoneGPosted on 2002-09-18 at 20:20:10ID: 7290265

Again...Yes, I am having probs only with this site.
I am Admin! [lightening flashes...ocean surf sends spray high on rocky cliffs]
I have permission to do everything.
I will post the code when I am working a little less than 12 hours a day and have the time at home. [home's where the prob is]
I've asked EVERYBODY that I have given the URL to and [perhaps they are lying, but] they all say they are having no trouble with the site.

G'nite.

Ok. The following is the home page source code from: Win2K, IE 5.5
It was cut & pasted into a word doc [ in my WinME FAT32 partition.
The only thing visible is the text & that only if I manually link to another page & use the internal links to the home page.
I will follow up with the source code from the ME login, IE 5.0 which produces a different size word doc.

Increase pts.

Yeah... do that. I don't clean up Publisher code cheap...

You DO realize you have a TON of crap in those pages? Empty cells, nested tables, spacer graphics... and NONE of them is necessary.

Get a better tool.

by: StoneGPosted on 2002-09-21 at 06:28:03ID: 7295955

Good thing you didn't post that as an answer.
You have quite an attitude.
I'm not telling you to clean up anything.

Please feel free to be an @$$ in somebody else's thread.

by: webwomanPosted on 2002-09-21 at 06:55:16ID: 7295977

You want it to work? Clean it up. As I said at the very beginning, Publisher is a LOUSY web tool. If you use it, you WILL have problems.

The code is THE SAME. Different versions of browsers handle code differently. You use something that's a bad as the code from Publisher, and yes, some browsers WILL choke on it.

>>The only thing visible is the text & that only if I manually link to another page & use the internal links to the home page.>>

So your links are most likely wrong -- again, probably because of Publisher.

If you want to continue using Publisher, this is what's going to happen ALL THE TIME. GET A BETTER TOOL.

You're trying to build a house with an exacto knife and rubber cement. You MIGHT be able to put something together, but at the least touch it's going to fall apart.

by: StoneGPosted on 2002-09-21 at 07:13:49ID: 7295989

I'm not a web expert, I don't intend to be. That's why I was asking for help.
You have not addressed the problem in a manner that I can [or will] use & I am not going to accept any of your rantings as an answer.

I'm not fond of being shouted at this early in the morning.
Please irritate someone else for a while.

Unless I get a response from somebody else I'm going to request a delete for this thread.
Satisfying my curiosity is not worth this load.

by: webwomanPosted on 2002-09-22 at 05:16:28ID: 7296845

>>I'm not a web expert, I don't intend to be. That's why I was asking for help.>>

No one was suggesting you need to be...only that you need to  use another tool for web pages. One which is DESIGNED for that task, not one for PRINT design. FrontPage would be preferable to Publisher. FWIW, Word is even WORSE than Publisher.

>>You have not addressed the problem in a manner that I can ****[or will]**** use & I am not going to accept any of your rantings as an answer.
>>

And therein is the problem. If you aren't willing to accept that your choice of tool IS the problem, nothing is going to help. If you notice, I was NOT the only person saying that. Though, of course, you are free to reload drivers, hack your registry, etc. if you want to. I don't think it's going to help.

by: StoneGPosted on 2002-09-22 at 07:06:30ID: 7296921

Your comments, such as "You DO realize you have a TON of crap in those pages?...etc." along with your highly obnoxious attitude come across as suggesting that I should understand the tiny details of web page construction. I am, currently, not interested at web site creation at that level. If I were, I would be answering questions instead of asking them.

You consistantly ignore my statements of fact concerning this problem with comments such as "I suspect you're not the only person having problems with it, just that nobody else said anything." so you can continue this bizzare triade of yours.

The facts are:
Out of 45 known visitors to this site [2-6 times a month, each, for several months] only one has had/ is having any problems accessing anything in this site & that is me when I am logged under Win2K on my computer. I have asked each one directly. They are not lying & are savvy enough to know when they are having problems viewing a web site.
I, personally, have accessed this site from about 30 different computers [at work, home & friends computers] with O/S's ranging from Win95 to XP, Netscape & IE browsers of various versions. I have had no problems.

MS Pub 2K may be bad, but the web site is functioning as it should except in one & only one case.
Until I see some evidence to the contrary, Occam's Razor indicates that the most likely cause is something in the configuration of my Win2K/IE setup.

You come across, very strongly, as a tunnel-visioned, foul-tempered individual who thinks very highly of her own opinions & not at all of the the opinions of others.
You have failed to address the original question which was "Why this configuration [and ONLY this configuration] fails to access the site."
You can continue to see me as the problem, here [as I am sure you will], but fact remains that, with all your ranting against Pub2K, you still have failed, with any clarity, to address the question posed.
I have not yet tried 1cell's suggestions. Hopefully I will have time this evening.
In the meantime, as I requested in my last post:
"Please irritate someone else for a while."

Thank you.

by: 1cellPosted on 2002-09-25 at 17:22:06ID: 7303507

thanks for pointing that out.

now, back to your problem.

While I do agree that any WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) web design program, like FrontPage, is NOT the tool of choice for any full time web designer, I will disagree with webwoman on most points.

First of all, while most MS editing tools do fill in a ton of proprietary code, the page which you've posted here seems to be relatively clean comparatively speaking.  Typically, Front Page, Word, etc, would include many proprietary style references.  everything that I can see here is straight, standard HTML.  I do not believe code to be the problem.  Especially if it works properly on the same browser and OS versions on another installation.  We're talking about Microsoft products all the way around so the likelihood that there's actually a code problem between the editor and the viewer is highly unlikely, IMO.

I've been doing websites for many years and I do not see a problem with spacer images, nested tables, or empty cells.  While it is nice to most alternative browsers if you at least include a <br/> tag between the <td> and </td> instead of having a totally empty cell, it is not required.  This is a much debated subject as you have one faction saying, "correct standard", another, "less code", and all the rest who pipe in on either side.  My bottom line?  I don't design for a real wide variety of target browsers.  I do degradation tests on all the sites I do in IE4+, NS4.7+ and Opera6.  The code works and definately, without question, in Internet Explorer, the single most forgiving browser made.

Yes, I think this problem boils down to an issue on your client machine.  Not to say that it couldn't be something in the code, just saying I don't think it's likely given the facts.

Browser config or corruption is possible.  I originally questioned DirectX as it will often update specific activeX controls but you're not even using an ASP page here let alone any kind of activex calls.  I'm not thinking it will likely be the video drivers but it's worth fixing up front and getting it out of the way.  There is a very remote possibility.

********************************************************
Questions:

also, Have you tried the site with NS6.X on the same system?  That would help narrow it down a bit.

Under Tools | Internet Options | Advanced, is 'Show friendly error something something' unchecked?  Make it so.  That setting could possibly suppress clues.

In your posts with the source code, was that cut and paste from the actual file or was it through View | Source???  If at all possible, it would be more helpful to look at the actual source code directly from the file before it was compiled through the browser.

by: StoneGPosted on 2002-09-26 at 19:51:50ID: 7306250

Hmmm...
I didn't receive a notif for your comment...guess there's still some EEbugs.

Haven't tried N6, yet. My dialup's pretty damn slow [really?] so I've been waiting till I could start a download at bed time. Maybe tonite or tomorrow.

The code was c 'n p from view source.
What do I look for in the files I ftp'd to my ISP to locate the un-compiled code?

I'll try the "show friendly" bit shortly and see what happens.
Thanks for the input.
I'll get back when I have something to get back with.

by: StoneGPosted on 2002-09-27 at 15:54:58ID: 7306837

Downloaded & installed Net 7 last nite.
Same problem.
The "show friendly" was already checked.

What file would have original source code?

by: 1cellPosted on 2002-09-27 at 16:09:18ID: 7306865

what were the results of updating video and direct x drivers?

to get the original uncompiled source code, you would need to open the file through a text editor like notepad, not through a browser.  You should have the file local to your system?

by: webwomanPosted on 2002-09-27 at 16:39:24ID: 7306906

HTML is simply text -- the HTML file IS the original source code. That's what the browser interprets.

If you're talking about the Publisher file -- that's NOT the source for this. The HTML file that it generates is what the browser uses, NOT the Publisher file. If you don't believe me, upload the Publisher file and make a link to it and see what happens.

You can change that Publisher file to your heart's content, it won't have any effect on the web page until you save it out as HTML -- at which point you will likely have the exact same problem.

If you're viewing the source through the browser, and copy that, you can edit it with anything that edits text. Notepad works. You just have to save it with the same name and reupload it.

Though, I must point out that if you do that, you will NOT have what Publisher generated, but a cleaned up version.

Which, like it or not, is what I originally said the problem was.

I haven't had time to un & re install the vid drivers yet.
Today, I hope.

I guess I allowed myself to get side-tracked in this thing.
Re-installing the vid drivers did the trick.
Interesting that there were newer versions of the driver files than the ones I used for the original W2K setup.
Over wrote them.
Not really sure where they came from. [that bothers me some...i don't like those kinds of surprizes on my computer. wonder where they came from?]
Thanks, 1cell!
