Question

Setting up dual boot with Windows XP Home Ed and Windows 2000

Asked by: Jayan

I have a new machine with XP Home Ed installed. Now, I want to set up Windows 2000 in another partion. I have 3 partions, C with XP, another primary partion D and a logical drive, each 20GB with NTFS file system. And I heard Win2000 CD is bootable and I copied the NTLDR and NTDTECT.COM.

My question is,

How to change the bios setting? I tried hitting 'DEL' key while booting the computer but it didn't bring up the BIOS settings.
if i change the bios to 'boot from CD' and restart the machine with windows 2000 Cd, will it start automatically to install the same? In that case, is it possible to select Drive D?

Is it possible to get the full instructions? (For windows XP, I have only the restore CDs)

It would be agreat help if anyone can answer this question. I tried using Win 98 boot disk etc.. but they dont recognise the drives as they all are NTFS file system.

Thanks in advance!!

It won't do it automatically but it presents you with options one of which is to install. And yes you can choose which partition to install it on.

>>>Is it possible to get the full instructions? (For windows XP, I have only the restore CDs)

Not sure what you are asking. Only having the retore CD could make doing this a bit tricky. It is better of have XP setup the dual boot loader because it is a bit better then the one that comes with Win2000. Generally speaking you need to do what is a Repair on the XP installation after you install Win2000. This is done by doing the following

Your going to run into problems installing win 2000 AFTER XP..

I did it and couldnt get XP to load. No matter what I tried. ALthought I could still start Win2k.

Microsoft says ALWAYS install the earlier version FIRST then move on. Of course I didnt read that until after I screwed myself =(

So what I had to do was uninstall XP and then reinstall it.

I know thats probably not what you wanted to hear. But, Well thats what I had to do.

Actually it doesn't matter if XP is installed first or last. As long as one can to the Repair thing as outlined in the links I provided.

Done this myself several times with no problem.

Yes, Mr.CrazyOne. Thats what I also read.

I also read that it is enough if u replace the boot files in XP, NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM after installing the Window 2000 and it should work (Ref: question-Installing Windows 2000 Server over Windows XP Professional). This Windows XP Home Edition is pre-installed when I bought the computer.

I tried to accesss the BIOS set up but could not do so. During boot process there is no statement indicating the specific key for entering into BIOS setup. So, I dont know how to make the system to boot from CD. Can any of u throw some light in this regard?

Thanks.

Umm on some systems hitting the delete key will get you in the BIOS. On others it could be one of the F keys like F1 or F2 etc.

by: JayanPosted on 2002-12-05 at 07:41:01ID: 7537234

The key to access the BOS is F2 in my system.

I modified the setting to bood from CD but still the system is not booting from the windows 2000 Cd. Shoud I use a XP boot disk?  and can I use the following link ro create the boot disk?

Curious about where you got the Win2000 CD. Is this an original CD or one that was burned for archiving?

That Link you posted doesn't seem to work at this moment.

by: JayanPosted on 2002-12-10 at 08:25:17ID: 7560431

I was able to boot from the CD afterwards...

After I installed the Windows 2000, I restored 'Drive C' using the restore CD.

Finally modified the boot.ini file to enable the OS choice.

So, Win XP and Win 2000 are working fine now.

Thanks for the help.
