The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. What Utility Can Be Used to Check/Repair Bad Disk?

Hello.

Just today, I ran into another technology failure to be added to my list. All of a sudden, when I boot up Windows XP, I get the message, "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency". At the end of CHKDSK-ing, the end of the message is "...found no problems."

I have a dual boot system which has two hard drives. The primary drive is a 40 Gb drive on which Windows XP Home Edition resides. The other disk is a 20 Gb drive, a somewhat older drive. On it, Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 2 resides in one partition and Windows 2000 Server resides on the other partition.
In the 'good old days of Windows98', I could run SCANDISK and I would have some luck repairing a disk. Backups could be made and time was able to be bought.

Windows XP AND 2000 Pro can read all drives(partitons) except for drive E: (where WIN2K Server USED to live). Windows Explorer tells me that there is, in fact, a drive E. When I double-click on the icon I get, "The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable."

Does Windows provide and new utilities for an attempted repair of a drive OTHER than the drive the active version of Windows is operating on? I once had Norton Utilities 8.0, a long time ago and far too outdated now, even if I COULD find it.
