The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Weird boot-up problem

Asked by Sal_Laz in Windows 2000 Operating System

Tags: boot, problem

Hi

A couple of days ago, whilst watching a Quicktime movie, there was either an Explorer or Internet Explorer error (not sure which, sorry). When I pressed the button to report the problem the computer rebooted. There didn't seem to be any problems with the reboot, although it did check the disk for errors (which it corrected). When it reached the Logon screen, I shut it down again.

Next morning, when I pressed the power button on the front of the machine, the computer lights came on, but it didn't start booting up - the screen remained blank and the printer did not initialise. It only booted up when I turned it off and on again by the power switch at the back of the computer. When it did boot up, it displayed "Updated ESCD correctly" at the bottom of the boot screen.

The computer appeared to operate normally once it had booted. It was shutdown again overnight and this morning when I came to boot it up, I had to use the on-off switch at the back of the machine again. When it started up, it went straight into the BIOS setup. It said something about the computer struggling to maintain CPU speed on the last bootup and to check it was set correctly - which it was.

I exited the BIOS and the computer booted normally (I didn't notice if it said Updated ESCD this time).

So what the heck is going on here? Have my BIOS settings somehow been changed? What can I do to fix it?

Thanks

Sally
