Question

Boot Manager Recommendation (FREEWARE)

Asked by: lidsky

Here's the situation.
System was running Win98SE on an 8GB drive (1 partition, FAT32).
Drive was replaced by a 40GB drive (1 partition, NTFS) and Win2K installed.
Win98 drive installed as slave (drive D:), so that data files could be copied to Win2K (drive C:).

Can any one recommend a FREEWARE boot manager which will also allow booting from drive D:?

I want a boot manager that has been tried and tested, I don't want a lot of grief!!!

NOTE: These are physical drives, NOT PARTITIONS.

Yes, I am aware that Win98 will not be able to see the NTFS disk.

Please don't flame me if this has been asked before.
I am offering 500 points, just to keep the flames away :-)
Thanks for your help.

ON the second hard drive...you still want to boot to the win98(Have tried adding a second selection to the boot.ini file?)

Actually I have done a qoogle search and found some of these. What I would really like is a recommendation from someone who has used these and can verify that they do what it says on the box. I really don't want to be trying several different ones and introducing problems.

To locc,
Editing the boot.ini file would be a solution, I suppose. Can you point me to, or supply, the correct syntax for the required parameters. I tried this once on a NT/Win3.1 system, but never got it work.

I just completed a question from someone with a similar situation and they went to http://www.boot-us.com and downloaded their free boot manager. It appears to work quite well, as well as allowing you to choose to create a bootable floppy instead of overwriting your boot sectors. (So you can try, see if you like it without doing any damage to your drives.)

Hope this helps!

locc,
Thanks for the URL, I've read through it and it looks like it should do the trick. It certainly looks like the simplest solution. As I am asking this question on behalf of a friend it will take a few days before I can try it out on his machine. I'll report back with the results.

Well, hopefully everything works out, goodluck

Hey Lidsky,
I'm the guy that bartender was talking about. I had just about the same problem & the boot manager from http://www.boot-us.com works wonders. Like he said you don't even have to install it on your hard drive unless you want to. I'm booting from the floppy when I need to get into xp & it's a breeze. Best of all it's free. Check it out.

Thanks for the backup innitdeep. Perhaps I should have left this one for you. ~LOL~

LILO... GRUB... these used on linux for multi boots with all windows versions. comes with nice little OS called Linux

by: lidskyPosted on 2003-04-09 at 11:49:22ID: 8301818

innitdeep,

I checked out boot-us.com and it looked pretty good, until I read the licensing restrictions.

Restrictions of the non-licensed version
The non-licensed version has the following restrictions as compared to the licensed version:
* No password protection in boot manager
* Restricted password protection for configuration program
* No support for boot from second, third,... disk
* No support for true partition hiding in boot manager
When the boot manager is installed to the hard disk these features are available only in the licensed version. However, if the boot manager is installed to diskette these features are also available in the non-licensed version. This allows the potential customer to check and try out all the features of Boot-US.

Looks like it is only fully functional from diskette.
Anyway, I'll discuss these options with my friend and see which solution is most suitable.
Cheers

Have you cheked out my recommendation yet?

Smart BootManager..

by: lidskyPosted on 2003-04-10 at 09:19:30ID: 8307389

Mirfster,
I have looked at the site. It looks like a bit of over kill for we want to do and the author seems to be chinese, so his instructions are not exactly clear.

by: MirfsterPosted on 2003-04-10 at 09:38:34ID: 8307536

What you don't speak Chinese?  I thought everyone spoke Chinese... :)

Okay, I'll see what else I can recommend.

by: lidskyPosted on 2003-04-11 at 12:08:24ID: 8315201

locc,
Have tried modifying boot.ini, but unable to make it work.
Always get "File not found, NTOSKRNL.EXE".
I will try one of the other proposed solutions and report back when done.

by: lidskyPosted on 2003-04-22 at 12:01:09ID: 8375607

And the winner is .........  Bartender_1

In the end this turned out to be the simplest solution.
Even though the instructions are a bit hazy.

Thanks to all the others that offered their advice.
