Question

getting rid of unwanted toolbar in IE

Asked by: AWP

I forgot to turn my firewall back on and now I have two toolbars that popup sporadically in IE (masterbar and searching4u).  I've tried running Ad-ware but it's not catching it.  How can I get rid of this?  I cannot find a refernce to these names anywhere.

Try either the new version of Ad-Aware version 6 or SpyBot Search & Destroy Version 1.2.

"Right-Mouse" click on an empty spot of the Toolar while in IE.  Remove any check marks for Toolbars not wanted.  Also, heed MSGeek's response and get SpyBot and/or Ad-Aware.  I have both on my machine, great tools, both Free.

1. update ad-aware and  rescan
2. reset toolbar setting in registry

Try this procedure and reset the toolbar setting from Registry

- Close all browser windows (Important)
- Open registry editor (start>run>regedit.exe)
- goto the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

There are 3 sub keys: Explorer, ShellBrowser, WebBrowser

In each of these sub-keys is the entry for ITBarLayout

For IE Toolbars: The WebBrowser Sub-key directly affects IE.
For Windows Explorer Toolbars: The Explorer Sub-key directly affects Explorer.
The ShellBrowser sub-key may affect IE as well. Its effect on IE and Windows Explorer is unknown at this time, so if the first option doesn't work, delete the ITBarLayout value here as well.

Choose the relevant sub-key and right click where it says ITBarLayout and select Delete.

The deleted value will automatically be recreated for you.

(OR)

Delete the Key "Toolbar"
Restart Windows. The toolbar configuration is not reset to defaults.

According to this: http://www.searching-4u.com/pages/download.php, the searching4u toolbar should be uninstallable as a standard Windows uninstall.  Does that not work?  (Wouldn't surprise me, adware being what it is, but it's worth a shot. . . .)

by: AWPPosted on 2003-04-18 at 07:27:02ID: 8354216

I updated ad-aware and it got rid of searching4u, but not masterbar.  I had not thought of looking in add/remove programs.  after reading bkinsey's comment I went there and removed masterbar.

by: AWPPosted on 2003-04-18 at 07:28:20ID: 8354218

I needed an upgrade from version 5 of Ad-aware to vs 6.0.  This still did not get rid of masterbar.  it was in add/remove programs and is now gone.

I'm gettin some responses pretty quickly.  How do you know when they get posted so you can respond to them?  Can anyone respond to them?

You receive an e-mail from EE when a post is made to a question you are subscribed to.  Depending on your e-mail implementation speed varies with how quickly the EE member gets the post and whether they are busy making a living.  Right now I have my own SMTP server so mail gets here pretty quick.

That you don't get notified for.  You have to go to that area and look. ie.  I spend a lot of time in Win2k or Security area.
