Yes, use the /ONECPU option in BOOT.INI.

See:

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/info/bootini.shtml

for details.

You could also disable the second CPU slot in the BIOS without having to remove the CPU.

Hello,

There are a couple of ways you can make the machine with multiprocessor boot up with a single processor.
First you can go into the BIOS of the machine where generally both the CPU's will be mentioned and enabled.
This though is possible only if your BIOS has that option. Here you can disable the processor you want disabled and after rebooting the machine, only one processor will work and be used by Win2k/NT.

The second option is to edit your boot.ini file and make the computer see only a single processor.
The following  boot.ini switches will make it more clearer. These option will have Win NT/Win2K only enable one CPU of a multiprocessor system.

W2k and WNT4 have boot.ini switches which force it to use only one processor. The switch is

/ONECPU

This option will have NT only enable one CPU of a multiprocessor system.

/NUMPROC= Only the number of CPUs specified will be enabled.
Also: /NUMPROC=2 on a 4-way system will cause 2 of the 4 processors to be unused by NT.

Hope this helps.

Hello Mr NLuxford,

The following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article will give some more information about the boot.ini 'switches' in Win NT 4.0. I think such 'boot.ini' switches should be similar to the two Operating Systems. Hopefully you should be able to disable the Processor as you need to.

Do take a look at this.

Hello Cempasha

Sir, I think this answer should be considered a PAQ, because  I too answered similarly, and to some extent so did drcodrco. Assigning the points(if any) to any one person , in this context may not be right. I think my answer was
much comprehensive and explanatory.
Many people prefer cut and dry answers. I really do not prefer to give an unemployed person money, I prefer to
provide him with a way to get some education so that he can earn ' money '.

Thanks

Please note that my comment addresses this question exactly (i.e. HOW TO BOOT ONE CPU) and was posted before Arjun1's later comment.

He notes the SAME feature (the /ONECPU option) but the "more comprehensive" comment, while valid, is not applicable to this situation.

by: jhancePosted on 2003-06-05 at 08:23:14ID: 8658073

You'll also note that the link I posted addresses ALL the possible BOOT.INI options in case the user needed to use one or more in the future.

I seriously can cry right now :~( I've typed about 6-7 lines and some how it all got deleted. Don't even know how I can put them on sentences again. Anyway I'll try;

first of all I need to say that I'm just an expert like you guys (mentioning this to say that whatever I say is what I think and do not reflects this site) Also let me explain my recommendation, I've chosen jhance's comment because it was the first comment which was correct (not saying that first comment on the question). I also need to say that PAQ is not an option for me in here because problem is problem resolved (not 100% sure because questioner did not respond but comments made me 99% sure) Also points split is used when there is a problem with 2 or more different solutions.
To sum up my recommendations do not mean anything actually. It is just helping the admins & mods who are finalising the questions. Admin or a mod will be checking this question in a week time to finalise it so you can leave any message to them in here. So before closing the question they'll see your comments.
If there is anything more that I can help please also post here
Thanx

Pasha
