Question

Changing CD Key - ASAP

Asked by: JeffreyGB

I built a system for a customer a few weeks ago and temporarily installed my copy of win2k onto it so that they could use the computer while we waited for their copy to arrive (they needed the computer fast, for business reasons, and we didn't want to pay the $250 that a new copy from here in town costs). Anyway, I now have their copy of it and would like to do what I need to in order to change the registration over to their copy. I know in win98 there's a registry key you can change pertaining to the CD key information. Is there anything similar I can change with win2k, or will I have to completely reformat (which I'm hoping to avoid because of the issue of backing up and reinstalling/restoring the business files they have from the last couple of weeks)?

Thanks!

You can change it here

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
Name: ProductId
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value: 6th through 15th characters represent the CD Key (I recommend writing down the whole thing).

Via the registry

Go
Start
run
type in regedit
go to that key

Thanks. Is there a way I can supply the new information from the customer's key, or do I have to have win2k installed with his key to know what I should be putting in? (the key is 25 chars long. What part of that makes up the 10 chars that you're talking about?)

Hey Glenn, on my W2K Pro machine... following your path.. I only found the converted OEM number.....

51xxx-OEM-0006044-7xxx8

this is very different than the 25 digit key I put in.... I assume this is a conversion... is there somewhere that shows the original key?

Jeff,
Look in this question, it will explain what you can do to change it.  (I was wrong in my initial post that the key is in the registry)

Bill,
The tool that crazyone has posted will display your cd key.

Jeff,
Are you saying that the cd key did not come with the cd?  It may be an MSDN version with the cd key burnt into the installation

No...here's what I'm looking at: The computer is installed with my cd key, which I have. I also have the cd and cd key for his copy of win2k. I don't want to have to reinstall windows to have his cd key be the one that windows is registered with.

Ok, sysprep will do that for you as stated in that other question

You can use the Sysprep tool below. It is really meant for imaging W2K, but you could use it just the same to remove the product key. After using the tool the user will be presented with a mini setup wizzard where they will be required to enter a key among other information. Some of the answers can be scripted if need be. Also the tool nicely removes it's self at the end of the mini setup wizzard.

Hi JeffreyGB,

Did sysprep solve your problem?  I ran it but it did not ask for a new key .... only user info.
Any ideas....I have the exact situation as you.
Thanks!

Near as I can remember, it did. I know that for my situation, it didn't end up working, simply because the other version of Windows was a Win2k update cd, so the key from it wasn't accepted into my full version install, but if I had another full version license, it would have worked.
