Browse All TopicsI built a system for a customer a few weeks ago and temporarily installed my copy of win2k onto it so that they could use the computer while we waited for their copy to arrive (they needed the computer fast, for business reasons, and we didn't want to pay the $250 that a new copy from here in town costs). Anyway, I now have their copy of it and would like to do what I need to in order to change the registration over to their copy. I know in win98 there's a registry key you can change pertaining to the CD key information. Is there anything similar I can change with win2k, or will I have to completely reformat (which I'm hoping to avoid because of the issue of backing up and reinstalling/restoring the business files they have from the last couple of weeks)?
Thanks!

Jeff,
Look in this question, it will explain what you can do to change it. (I was wrong in my initial post that the key is in the registry)

Bill,
The tool that crazyone has posted will display your cd key.

Ok, sysprep will do that for you as stated in that other question
You can use the Sysprep tool below. It is really meant for imaging W2K, but you could use it just the same to remove the product key. After using the tool the user will be presented with a mini setup wizzard where they will be required to enter a key among other information. Some of the answers can be scripted if need be. Also the tool nicely removes it's self at the end of the mini setup wizzard.

You can change it here
NT\CurrentVersion
Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows
Name: ProductId
Data Type: REG_SZ
Value: 6th through 15th characters represent the CD Key (I recommend writing down the whole thing).
