Question

svchost.exe generated error

Asked by: SShowler

I get the error:
svchost.exe has generated error and you will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

I see the response posted by eric55 posted on 2/17/2003.

I tried running sfc/scannow, but I find its path. Search does not work now, so I can't find the path.

There is no phone connected to this machine, only a DSL modem. There is a CD and DVD drive.

I guess I need some more instructions

Thanks,

Stephen L. Showler

256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry

SYMPTOMS
When you try to open a dial-up networking connection, you may receive the following error message:
Svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log will be created.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if a version of Novell GroupWise that contains the Gwtps1.dll file with a date earlier than July, 2000, is installed on your computer.

The early versions of the Gwtps1.dll file may corrupt the Windows dial-up networking registry keys. This has been corrected in the GroupWise Enhancement Pack Support Pack 2 client software.

This corruption occurs because the GroupWise client expects the dial-up networking registry keys to list the various dialing locations in the same manner as that of Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98. However, the listing protocol for registry keys related to dialing locations is different in Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003 from that in Windows 95 or Windows 98. In Windows 95 or Windows 98, the listing for dialing locations start at Location0 -- for example, Location0, Location1, and so on. In Windows 2000, dialing-location listings start at Location1 -- for example, Location1, Location2, and so on.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps.

NOTE: After you follow these steps, you may have to re-create many of your dialing locations.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
In Registry Editor, expand the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony\Locations

On the Registry menu, click Export Registry File.
In the File name box, type locations, and then click Save.

NOTE: You can restore this registry subkey by double-clicking the Locations.reg file that you saved.
Under the Locations subkey, delete all Locationx folders (where x is a number) except for Location1 and Location2. For example, if the Locations registry subkey listing is similar to the following
 -Locations
   |
   |-- Location1
   |-- Location2
   |-- Location3
   |-- Location4

delete the Location3 and Location4 subkeys.

To delete a subkey, right-click the Locationx folder, and then click Delete. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
Rename the Location1 registry subkey as Location0 (zero). To rename a subkey, right-click it, and then click Rename.
Rename the Location2 registry subkey as Location1.

NOTE: The Locations subkey should appear as follows:
 -Locations
   |
   |-- Location0
   |-- Location1

Click the Locations registry subkey.
In the right pane of the Registry Editor window, right-click CurrentID, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
Right-click LocationListVersion, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type 2, and then click OK.
Right-click NextID, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type 4, and then click OK.
Right-click NumEntries (if it is present), and then click Delete. Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type NumEntries, and then press ENTER.
Right-click NumEntries, and then click Modify. In the Value data box, type 2, and then click OK.
In the left pane of the Registry Editor window, expand the Location1 subkey that is under Locations.
If the AreaCodeRules subkey is not listed under Location1, follow these steps:
Click the Location1 subkey (to select it if it is not already selected).
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
Type AreaCodeRules, and then press ENTER.
Quit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.

There are now a lot of services scerwed up on my machine; or is it so hopeless that I must reformat the hard drive and start over?
As an example:
1. Norton Anti-virus 2000 is completely non functional.
2. Clipboard won't communate between programs.
3. Scoring lists in ie don't scroll.
4. Files seem to missing.
5. Search on the start menu seem can't be called up.

Thanks to all who have sent us to the microsoft page that gives you the patch download.

however, once you got through the install process it says you need at least pack 2 in order to complete the patch.

i'm not sure what this means - anyone?

by: war1Posted on 2003-08-11 at 23:29:16ID: 9127947

SShowler,
With all the problems, It would be best to reinstall Windows 2000.  Then download all the latest critical updates. You should be protected from this RPC vulnerability.

naava,
You confused me with your post for a moment.  If you post a separate question, you will get a better response.

by: naavaPosted on 2003-08-12 at 10:16:42ID: 9131765

sorry for the confusion

i solved the problem

i had to upgrade to microsoft service pack 4
i did that,
and then i installed the patch

and all is well.

thanks for the help!

Guys I am a very basic user but I was able to fix it all on two computers.  Just think of this tread as the fix for even dummies.

"svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created"

If you follow what I did then you should be able to do it.

1. is your computer crashing? if yes go to 2 if no go to 3.

2. (from Hurbold) If you don't get an opportunity to apply the patch before the PC reboots, go to start > run > services.msc.

Right click Remote Procedure Call, select Properties, then Recovery. On all three drop-down boxes in this window, select take no action. The default is set to reboot. This will give you all the time you need to update. Please note that Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > uncheck Automatically Restart does not seem to work to prevent system reboot.

3. Run trend micro online virus killer

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

4. Download the following patch and apply it.

I have received  an alert from Symantec about W32.Blaster.Worm. The web site gives a complete explanation how to remove the worm, download the MS patch and then restore the services.

SShowler,
Did I not talk about getting the MS patch first to prevent the RPC vulnerabilities?  tonyc9 just repeated what I said.
