Question

microsoft virus update question

Asked by: benpung

hey all, question for you. a buddy of mine has a comp with win 2k on it. i'm not sure which service pack he's on. he got the comp from his brother a month or so ago. he was going to download that patch from microsoft to protect against the blaster virus, and i asked him if he had a legal copy of win2k or if the copy on his machine was pirated. he says "dunno". so i told him not to download the patch until he gets ahold of his brother and finds out b/c i know that in the past microsoft has made patches and service packs available that have done things to disable illegal copies. i know it's not right to have an illegal copy of of an os so please don't give me that lecture. at the moment the guy barely has beer money so i'm just trying to help him out.  so i figure while he's finding out if he has an illegal copy or not, i would find out about the updates.  so my question is, has anyone had, or know of anyone who's had, any trouble with this service pack (sp4) or the blaster patch messing up pirated copies of w2k? thanks for any info.

While I DO recommend that your friend be sure he has a legal copy of Win2000, 2000 (unlike XP) DOES NOT have WPA (Windows Product Activation) and there is no problem TECHNICALLY with the update.  Be aware, however, that to install the MS03-026 patch you must have W2K SP2 or later installed.

If he does not have SP2 installed he can use the SP4 Express Install.  Go Here:

so only xp and up (server 2003, etc) have that problem? his brother's new system has xp, that will serve him right (i'm pretty sure knowing this guy that the xp is pirated, but he's probably smart enough not to download it).  now that my curiousity is up, what are his brother's options if he does have an illegal copy of xp? it seems like he would have to have the patch b/c even if he found a way to clean the thing he could still get the virus again. i wonder if microsoft took the time to build that disabling stuff into the patch?  mmmmm, interesting......

Just because it is a pirated copy doesn't mean that the downloads won't work.  I have heard legend of people having bad copies............ but as long as they activated it, also not done the legal way, they can download and install any and all patches from the MS website without any problems.

thanks to all that posted on this. he did end up having a pirated copy (shame shame), but the patch went on fine and i think he should be all set now.  all comments were helpful. i accepted jhance's answer b/c he/she was first to respond.....
