Upgrading to 2000 and XP

I have win ME installed on a clean drive. I am trying to upgrade to Win 2000 or XP
both attempts tell me that the dll files allowing the upgrade are not present (UpgDlls\w95upg.dll\WIN9XUPG.DLL ). What can I do? I had win 98 SE on the machine but slicked the drive before installing ME.

It sounds like the computer was originally Win95 ( or 98 ) and upgraded to WinME, and that any reference to the original OS was removed ( either by manually deleting the files, or via add/remove programs ). Your not going to upgrade this computer, choose new install and start fresh. Highly recommended is fresh start for all OS changes, upgrading has been known to cause undesirable effects.

Very much second everything Shep said I would only add this. Personally I would reccomend 2000 over XP for a lot of reasons. Unless you've been using XP at work or a friend's or the library and are like REALLY comfortable with it, then great, fine! otherwise coming from ME you'll find 2000 much less of a shock. actually coming from ME you'll be in heavan rather quickly! 2000's still the boss.

If you wanna play games, stick with WinXP.  The Classic Start Menu option will make XP look *very* familiar.  I like XP a lot, but upgrade installs from ME can go horribly wrong.  I second the adivce to do a clean install.

You may be able to upgrade if you rename win.com to something else and then try the upgrade.

I would agree in a fresh install though.  And if you are not planning on dual booting go with NTFS as its more stable/secure/more options, etc, etc.
