I think it would be better if you do full install.

Can I just purchase the Windows Professional Upgrade or is that problematical and should instead purchase the full install for Windows 2000?

Hello,
If "money is no object", and you do not have a lot of programs to reinstall, opt for the full install. Otherwise, you can save some money by buying the upgrade version. I have upgraded many Win98 and WinNT systems to Win2000 Pro with no problems. I thought a "loaded" laptop with Win98 would be problematical, but it sailed right through to Win2K without a glitch, and all the applications ran with no difficulties.
Others, I'm sure, may have had different experiences. One thing with buying the "full" version: it provides the option of either doing an upgrade or a "from scratch" install.

You won't regret your decision to get the full install in Windows2000 over an upgrade.
