i almost forgot, windows server 2003 standard

by: blumleyPosted on 2003-10-04 at 08:47:55ID: 9491329

You should have your server set up as a domain controller.  You should have all your users logging in to this domain with a domain userid.  Then all you have to do is make sure the profile path is configured correctly in each users profile.

I'm not familiar with 2003, but I'll give you the Win2k instructions...I think it's about the same:

If you haven't already, type dcpromo at the command line to promote your server to a domain controller.

From Active Directory Users and Computers, create a domain login for each user.  In the Profile tab use the UNC profile directory.  For instance \\yrserver\userprof\newuser.

Make sure your computers are members of the domain.  Have all users login to the domain by selecting from options during login.

ok, i am getting this done, and installing my dynamic ip redirection software again, it says i need a domain name.
i'll see about getting them to login

by: loonysalmonPosted on 2003-10-04 at 10:31:47ID: 9491711

ok, it is now setup as a domain controller, i have the profile thing setup right for each user

now how do i make sure that the computers are a member of the domain...isn't it the system ==> computer name tab --> change --> and then type in the domain.

i think that is where i go, and probably it is

hopefully

Yes,
Or you can right-click on My computer> Properties> Computer Name> Change.

Enter a Domain name and it will join that name.

It may ask for a username and a password for someone who is a Domain Admin.

You must have an account created on the Domain that is part of the Domain Admins group. Type in the username and password of that user.

I hope this helps!

Loony,
If you have Windows2003 server, set it up as a domain controller. place the users in an OU, set a group policy for folder redirection, enable Automatic Caching for documents. That is the concept of Intellimirror which is much better than a roaming user profile.

Step by step, kindof
1: Install Active Directory, use the DCPROMO command to do this, make sure you choose to install DNS, because if you don't the domain won't work right, also when you reboot, ensure the reverse lookup zone is created properly, if not clients can't authenticate properly.
1.5:Set up a shared folder on an NTFS drive for your users to store the data in, i would recommend the following sharename: Users or UserData
Assign the following permissions: Administrators==Full Control
Authenticated Users == all but Delete, Take Ownership, and Change Permissions.
Creator Owner== Full Control
2: Open active directory users and computers, right click your domain name and choose, New, Organizational Unit(ou).
Name it something you want, like Roaming Users.
3: Create a global group in the new OU to hold all of your user accounts.
4: Right click the OU, choose Properties, click the group policy tab, choose, New, name it redirection, (or something you want), and then choose, Edit.
5: expand the user configuration part so that you can see the Folder redirection section, Choose, advanced, redirect based on the group name you assigned earlier pointing to the share on your server, for example.
\\Servername\sharename\%UserName%\My Documents
\\Servername\sharename\%UserName%\Application Data
\\Servername\sharename\%UserName%\Desktop

When you get done with all three you are pretty much done.
If this isn't clear enough let me know and i'll type it up better, i'm not at work so i don't have a DC in front of me. This was just from memory so its rather vague on some options.
