Question

Automatic drive space checking

Asked by: dholder97

This may sound like a dumb question but oh well:

I have my own computer in the office.  It's not a server.  The servers are in the room adjacent to my office.  I've been keeping track of how much disk space is on them, but the way I do it is I simply go over there and check them and then enter the date and the amount of space into a text document.  I do this about once a month.

WHat I want to know is is there a way (im sure there is) to automate this to either net send me a message or output the amount of space taken up to a text file on my machine.  I can schedule the text file to open once a month.

I think I can do this on my own with a batch file, I'm just not sure what the command would be to check disk space through command line.  Does anyone know?  Thanks a lot in advance

How about enabling the Terminal services on the Windows 2000 server and then install the terminal services client on you machine. Logon to the server from you machine, use the terminal services client, and find out the info you want on the servers. Yeah you can write a script for it, but do u really want to do it?

I do the Terminal Server now.  I still want to automate this so that I don't have to consciously think about it anymore.  Just have it pop up for me every month or so.  I already have backup batch files that do that, they pop up the log on my screen every morning so I can just check to make sure it worked properly and then not worry about it anymore.  I figure since I'm an admin I have the right to make my job as easy as possible since computers will do anything you tell them to.

Do you know what the command in command prompt would be to just have it come back and tell you how much space is being taken up?

Okay simple free solution:

Make a batch file like this:

if exist size.txt del size.txt
echo c drive size>>size.txt
dir c:\ | findstr "Dir(s)">> size.txt
echo d drive size>>size.txt
dir d:\ | findstr "Dir(s)">> size.txt

You're output looks like:

c drive size
              53 Dir(s)  25,300,463,616 bytes free
d drive size
              27 Dir(s)   1,646,654,464 bytes free

You'll want to modify the batch file a bit for server names drives file names etc.
Just have the text files on a shared drive everyone can see & schedule the batch file with AT scheduling on the servers.

Cheers!
