Question

Lost Standard Toolbar in My Computer and My Documents

Asked by: BonnieW

My Computer and My Documents have no toolbar.  No File, Edit, etc....no go back or up one level.  I have to close and reopen the folder each time I want to select a file and once I've got it, I'm stuck with it until I close and reopen the folderand choose another file.  Windows Explorer has no such problem.   I don't know what happened.  I have no viruses...everything's up to date.   How do I restore my toolbar?

In windows explorer go to tools folder options and reset all folder views to default.  That should restore your settings.

That doesn't work....it restores settings except for toolbars and webview.

by: dimantePosted on 2003-10-12 at 08:58:36ID: 9535986

Well the File, Edit etc  should not be able to be removed...
Check for spyware / trojans

If these come up dry then do an upgrade install of your operating system to fix the corruption you are experiencing.

Do you have the lock toolbars option set?

by: sunray_2003Posted on 2003-10-12 at 10:30:58ID: 9536390

Try this might work

Goto

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer  NoFileMenu=1

you have to change this Value to 0 or delete this Key

Well, Dimante....I checked for spyware and there's none.

MetsysNimda...I don't believe I have them locked and since I don't have the View option, can't say for sure.

sunray....I checked the registry and it says only NoFileMenu...doesn't have a 1 or a 0...do you recommend that I delete it anyway?

Well dimante i hope you have an answer for this one, i've even tried to get rid of mine manually and by screwing up my registry.
wheeee

like don't store your registry backup on an NTFS volume BEFORE you make your NTFS DOS PRo diskette DOH!
Bonnie..
if anyone can figure it out i'm sure someone in this group of techie misfits can, although this one is outta my league

Thanks, Dimante.  I just did a Windows Update and that didn't do the trick.   I really hope I don't need to reinstall....I'm looking high and low for my install diskette with no luck so far.  BTW, if it matters, this a P4 2.8 hz computer, 80 gb, 512 RAM with an external 2.0 harddrive.  This probably isn't pertinent but over the weekend I tried tried and retried to hookup a second external drive....the USB 2.0 function wasn't working so I kept plugging and unplugging all my peripherals trying to see if any of them would work.  The PC got confused so I gave up and put everything back the way it was.   It was then that I noticed the missing toolbars....they could have been gone long before that and I just didn't notice though I doubt it.  I use My Documents a lot and would have noticed if I had to shut down and reopen everytime I wanted to look at a file.

BonnieW can you create a new user on your system and log in as the user to see if the file nemu is there for that user?  If it is your local profile is corrupted. Let me know and I can tell you what to do from there.

Good Morning, Dimante - Well, you figured out the problem.  New User has toolbars!!  Can I transfer New User's settings back to my folder?  Or will I have to use that login and reconfigure my desktop, start menu, and programs?  Thanks for figuring it out :)- I've yet to find my installation CD... :(

by: dimantePosted on 2003-10-15 at 05:47:10ID: 9554210

The best thing to do will be to log in as a different user with administrative priviledges and rename your NTUSER.DAT file NTUSER.OLD in your <USERNAME> profile folder.  Then log in and let Windows recreate the NTUSER.DAT file for you.  That way your favorites, etc will still be in your profile and only some settings will then need to be recreated.  But at least the whole machine does not need to be reloaded ;-)

GJ dimante...

i still wonder how it originally all went away though.

by: BonnieWPosted on 2003-10-15 at 21:20:14ID: 9559484

Hi D.....I followed your instructions and renamed the NTUSER.DAT file.  I logged in with my profile and Windows didn't create a new one for me.  Still no toolbars in my profile.

by: dimantePosted on 2003-10-16 at 05:08:08ID: 9561217

Unfortunately you are going to have to delete your profile and let windows recreate it when you log in =-(  You can however backup your Favorites folder and my documents so that you can put them in the new profile.

by: BonnieWPosted on 2003-10-16 at 05:58:55ID: 9561560

Can I drag my favorites, documents and desktop to New User....delete my profile....and then rename New User?

by: dimantePosted on 2003-10-16 at 06:03:15ID: 9561602

No.  You can however move the folders etc into a folder called backup then delete your current <username> folder from documents and settings.  Log in as <username> and then back in as administrator.  Windows will have created a new <username> folder.  You can simply move your folders in from backup in your new profile folder.

Thanks for your help, Dimante.  I'm ignoring the old profile and going with the new one.  Things are working okay...'cept I lost part of my Outlook toolbar today.. can't send and receive.  Must be goblins at work.  I'll try reinstalling Office and see what happens.  I'm accepting your answer and awarding points....thanks again.
