Question

if i reintall 2k over the top of itself is there a way to get all the programs on the hdd into the registry and menu without reinstalling them

Asked by: visxera

if i reintall 2k over the top of itself is there a way to get all the programs on the hdd into the registry and menu without reinstalling them.

the way the problem i have now (see other question) is going, it looks like i might have to suck it up and reinstall 2k over itself.
the only problem with this is that all the progs arent then in the add/remove or registry or start menu.
is there a program or a simple way to put them all in without having to go through the long drawn out process of reinstalling all of the programs?

I thought you said you tried to do an install over this one?  If not then during the setup it will attempt to find previous versions of windows when it does tell it you want to upgrade and it will leave all your settings and just reinstall the os ;-)

Before this I would still try the fixboot / fixmbr method.  But doing an upgrade will replace the os files too.

I don't recommend it you should just reformat and install everything again because you probably going to need service packs and programs won't be working so well after all.

So here is my way of doing things

1. reformat HD
2. Partition  5Gb for windows & Progs
3. Install Windows 2000 Pro
4. Instal up to date Hardware Drivers
5. Install Service packs http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/default.asp
6. install Programs
7. Backup or image the whole partition with Notron Ghost or other progs

now if your machine screw up again then you can use the image to get it working again for all other ways that I tried above your windows may work and may work well but not Perfect and it will causes more headaches in the future

Cheers :)

I have recovered many systems from the recovery console that end up serving flawlessly for years afterward.  I do however agree with (and use) ghost all the time ;-)

The difference between an expert and someone who is not is time and experience...  If you simply give up an wipe and reload all the time you can never learn what causes problems....  I have saved many clients servers/workstations because of things that I have learned from trial and error.  I have also helped Microsoft with solutions that thier technical support could not solve...  I always give everyone the benefit of the doubt and by them coming here they show that they don't just want to fix something but they want to know WHY it happens in the first place ;-)

well i got windows 2000 do to a repair which caused some other problems.
mainly no dialup connection or any ras services to speak of.
but i have since fixed that with a handy stint in the registry and now all is well and smooth.
i learned a fair bit over the last few days. dissapointing though i could not save the whole thing on my own but it was worth a go.
at least i didnt have to do a full install over the top and reinstall everything.
so all in all it was a succesful yet frustrating outing.
thanks to all who tried to help.
and for dimantes excellent last comment, he gets the points.

One more thing  visxera! remember to backup. All this work could be prevented if you backed the registry and windows directory and other important things if you don't know how then I suggest that you should ask on a new thread.

For dimante, our IT way is to mass buy same machine over most departments so we could have only 1 machine that we update alot then we reimage it. if any machine's windows fail we use altiris to restore from the network by a network boot. This works well because all users instructed to save on Network Drive that we created not on the machine itself!
The end result:
Clean Format, CLean Windows Registry, Clean from any hidden trojans, clean from any spywares, defraged HardDrive & Better Performance.
Most importantlyit's hassle free operation 99% of the operation is automated we just have to enter machine name and hit enter and it's done in 45minutes! then we have just to make sure it's running and logging ok!

Well that's one way to do it..  I am in a school with over 1100 machines really hard to budget and buy one type of machine for most orginizations budgets but if you can do it that is great.  We currently have 3 platforms and we use Norton Ghost most times for mass rollouts.  But if I do have problems from trojans or the like I still pull a machine offline and find out what happened so I can prevent it from happening and update my images.  That way I am not reimaging all day;-)

Regards,
D

WACK these TROJANS I found the best prevention from trojan is hardware firewall & Filter. we use a huge linux server to route everything and will clean all viruses if we keep updating the list!
I'm wondering that why you guys don't have altiris most highschools & colleges I've seen around my area has this program wait i know it's expensive for your school yeah that would make your life not so fun. BUDGET cuts, I hate em!

Last comment for this thread is that all schools should just buy Apple computers because Mac OS X is the most stable OS ever  thx to Darwin now it's UNIX based.

Cheers :)
