Question

Help: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request

Asked by: sthay

My laptop(W2KPro) belongs to DomainA, and recently, I brought it and pluged into DomainB network (of course all TCP/IP parameters and some other settings come from DHCP server of DomainB network). FYI, DomainA and DomainB are on difference forest and that there is no trust relationship amongh the two. And yet I can logon to DomainA succefully as the DNS server of DomainB forwards all referal request to DomainA DNS. Now the thing is that, when I try to access DomainB resource it poped me with a message "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request". Your advice would be very much appreciated. If I loged on locally then I can access the network resource on DomainB without any problem.

Sthay

Have you change the domain name for your laptop?
Right click on "My Computer", tab "Network Identification", click "Properties".
Then change the domain name.
Hope this help

Dear Hansenbong,

Changing domain name is not an option for me because 97% of my working time at DomainA environment. I think there must be away that you can access resource accros domain as long as computer has been configured properly.

I leave this question open for other at the moment.

Thank you all in advance,
Sthay

Create a text file containing the following:

10.10.10.10 <ServerName>
10.10.10.10 "DOMAINB        \0x1b" #PRE
10.10.10.10 <ServerName> #PRE #DOM:DOMAINB #DII DC

Where <ServerName> is the name of the PDC in Domain B, and 10.10.10.10 is its IP.  Obviously you'd also need to substitute the real name of domainb in the last line.

If you've not played with host files before, its important to know that for the 1b enty (second line above) must have exactly 20 characters between the quotes (ie 15 before the \ , the 0x1b counts as one character making 16 in total, if you see what I mean).

I'd suggest naming it something sensible like domainb-hosts.txt

Copy this to somewhere on your laptop, then navigate to Advanced TCP/IP Settings for your NIC and select the WINS tab.  Make sure that 'Enable LMHOSTS lookup' is enabled (ticked) and then click on Import LMHOSTS.  Find the file you've just created and click Open - this will automatically set up the hosts file for you (appending to one if it already exists).

Your laptop now has and explicit pointer to a logon server and (hopefully) this should resolve the issue.

Dear ThePilgrim,

Thanks for your advice. In fact, I did try your advice and yet it does not seem to work. Basically, the DomainB has WINS server in place. And my PC has got WINS IP address from the DomainB DHCP server.

So, I guess, what you have sugguested earlier should be employed by WINS server as well.

Hope to read more.

Sthay

If you add the entries into WINS on DomainB then you should be okay.  The only one that's a stumbling block is the 1Bh entry which still has to be imported from a file (Static mappings/Import entry), although since you've already got them typed into a file you might as well do the lot that way.

Hope it works.

Pilgrim.

You will see the errors in the following scenarios:-
PC YamahaA tries to access PC YamahaB's shared resource \\YamahaB\xyz.
PC YamahaA tries to print on a printer YamahaB_PRN connected to PC YamahaB

Reasons:
What's probably happening is your PC YamahaA is using cached domain credentials when accessing the PC YamahaB. This generally happens when YamahaA belongs to a domain while the YamahaB belongs to a workgroup.

Solution:
The easiest resolution would be: I am using Win2k as an example for the navigation.
1. Share a directory in <YamahaB> say xyz
2. Go to My Network Places in <YamahaA>
3. Right Click and Choose Map network drive
4. Choose a drive letter and in the folder specify \\YamahaB\xyz
5. Click on Connect using a 'different user name'.
6. Enter the YamahaB administrator (or any YamahaB user that has access to the shared resource) and the password.
7. Depending on whether you need to retain the share, choose the 'Reconnect at logon'.
8. Hit 'Finish
9. You should be able to access the shared resource using the mapped drive.
10. Now try accessing the PC YamahaB as \\YamahaB
11. If you have the YamahaB_PRN printer shared, it should be visible now.
12. Connect to the YamahaB_PRN printer and update the required drivers.
13. You should now be able to print.

Happy Networking !

I had the same type of problem.  Using the example here...  after I inserted the address of DOMAINA into the WINS configuration on the DOMAINB machine,  my problem was resolved.

I agree with you Len. I observed what you have mentioned works in the following scenariois :-
1. Both the domain controllers are active and can authenciate logon requests. OR
2. Each PC belongs to a separate domain. OR
3. Using LMHosts lookup. OR
4. WINS server exists in the network (your option)
I have not tried this out where both domain PC users rely on cached domain credentials

In my post, the domain user (credentials are cached) trys to access a PC in a workgroup and WINS server does not exist or is optional (general home network infrastructure)

It might also help to set the workgroup name same as the domain name if you still can't see the other workgroup PC in the 'Microsoft Windows Network'.

Thanks

Hi folks

I have a very similar prob. (see Q_20988252).

If the home user sets up a mapped drive and ticks "Reconnect at logon", then he will have the usual error message at work.

In the past I have used a small BAT file (with a NET USE command) on his desktop to reconnect his home "server" drive.

What if .....

net use \\<server>\<share> /USER:<username>

(if there's no shares defined, maybe try using ipc$)

Hey all,

Just popped in to say thanks.  netsolutions fixed the same problem for me. :)

Gotta love Google searches.  I find it strange that a run "\\<machine name>" command doesn't bring up a login prompt like it does when you are on DomainA trying to access a share.  Shrug, at least now I can access my home LAN and still login to the laptop as my domain account.
