Question

Remote Desktop

Asked by: jtp101

I'm looking for a simple (and preferably free) way of getting remote desktop functionality between 2 windows 2000 pro machines.  I know this is available in XP, but I'm not sure how to do it in 2000.

Unfortunately, W2K does not come with a TS CAL, although it can use the Server CAL when connecting to a W2K server...

I have used VNC successfully, but you might want to ck Steven's links for a tighter version..  :)  It is free, so the price is right...

Netmeeting also has a remote control feature (included with most windows OS's)

You could also try Real VNC http://www.realvnc.com/
It's a nice clean VNC version that did the trick for me.  I like it better than tight VNC.

Yes, actually the http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/winvnc.html link above points to the Real VNC site anyway.  I have downloaded both, and there doesn't seem to be that much difference between them - both work brilliantly!

Cheers,

Justin

Hello

Try TightVNC, I use the development version 1.3dev3, and it works much better than their previous ones, and best than VNC or RealVNC.

http://www.tightvnc.com/  this is their home page, you may want to give a donation if you prefer.

http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html this is their download page, at the bottom you can find the development version.

Give it a try.

But as I understand it, terminal server is only good for remotly accessing XP desktops - I need to do it with 2000....

by: funkyfingerPosted on 2004-02-18 at 12:54:31ID: 10396604

I am using XP (or 2000) to connect to windows 2000 server (or XP).
I am not sure if 2000 pro has this feature. If it does it would be start > terminal services client > terminal services client.
If you do not have this I do not know if it would be on the cd or if it only comes with win2k server

by: kreeseisPosted on 2004-02-18 at 12:56:21ID: 10396619

I've installed it on my 2000 box and it works great.

by: kreeseisPosted on 2004-02-18 at 12:57:39ID: 10396636

Pardon me.  I've installed on my 2000pro machine for connecting to my 2000 servers running terminal services and it works great.

by: Fatal_ExceptionPosted on 2004-02-18 at 13:18:53ID: 10396842

Ok guys...  W2K Pro does not come with the server edition of Terminal Services...  XP Pro does, XP Home comes only with the client....  Therefore, W2K Pro can TS into the Server which must be running Terminal Services Server...  XP Pro can TS into XP Home, W2K Server, and XP Pro...

BTW:  you do know this question has been closed, eh..?

by: robklPosted on 2004-02-20 at 11:18:45ID: 10415327

There's also NetMeeting which works well as remote desktop. I use it all the time for this purpose. It works on XP,98 also.

by: jtp101Posted on 2004-02-20 at 11:35:47ID: 10415461

ok, so just to be clear - can I install TS server on windows 2000 Pro?  That is, can I use Terminal services to get remote desktop functioanlity between to win 2000 pro machines?

Yes, I know the question has been closed, but I'm not going to tell anyone...  Who would turn away free advice ;-)

Thanks again for your help everyone,

Justin

by: Fatal_ExceptionPosted on 2004-02-20 at 17:46:44ID: 10417548

W2K comes with the TS client and license, but not the server...  You can use it to TS into a W2K server with the TS server running, but not between two W2K Pro machines...  Sorry...  That is why MS added that functionality to W XP Pro....

by: Fatal_ExceptionPosted on 2004-02-20 at 17:47:18ID: 10417551

But that being said, you could use something like VNC or TightVNC for that purpose...  :)

I know the support issue is closed but there is one thing that needs clarifying as RDC and VNC are different things. RDC actually gives you a seperate workspace on the machine that you are connected to - VNC doesnt do this by default (you control the console session).....

lol just install remote desktop on it

RDP server can be found on the windows 2003 resource kit (this is the RDP server not mstscc)

by: lfederPosted on 2005-03-02 at 14:24:58ID: 13444820

I am using remote RDC on my 2000 server,  When get booted out my connection says the terminal server has exceeded the maximum connections and doesn't allow me to connect, is there a way to reset these connections without rebooting the server?

by: Fatal_ExceptionPosted on 2005-03-02 at 14:39:37ID: 13444937

Not without direct access to the server.  If you can directly access the server, you can terminate an RDP session in the Terminal Services manager...  in the Users pane, right-click one of the users with a Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) session, and then click Logoff...
