Question

Deleting old win98 partition

Asked by: ketan_kunde

I have a 3 partition HDD which had windows 98 installed on c:\. Eventually I installed win2k on e:\ (clean install) and that is the only OS being used now. I now want to completely remove the win98 without upsetting my current setup. Is there any way I can go about this without upsetting my win2k and having to re-format my entire HDD?

Editing the boot.ini File
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/ddtools/hh/ddtools/bootini_4elv.asp

To configure the target computer, edit the boot.ini file by adding the appropriate debugger options to notify Microsoft® Windows® to load the kernel debugger.

To edit the boot.ini file in Notepad

Start Windows Explorer. Go to Tools | Folder Options | View. Make sure that Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected, and Hide File Extension for Known File Types is cleared.
Go to the root directory of the boot volume of your computer (on single-boot machines, usually C:\). Right-click on boot.ini. Select Properties, and remove the read-only attribute of this file. Click OK.
Double-click the file icon to start Notepad with boot.ini loaded.
If you are using an MS-DOS® Command Prompt window, use the following commands instead of steps 1, 2, and 3:
c:
cd \
attrib -s -h -r boot.ini
notepad boot.ini

Edit the file. (For a description of the boot.ini syntax, see Contents of the boot.ini File.)
Save the boot.ini file and quit Notepad. (You do not have to restore the original file attributes.)
Shut down the computer and restart Windows.

---------------------

Also if you use the following tool and open it up
click on the BOOT.INI tab
click the Check All Boot Paths button it will automaticall remove invalid boot paths

download thiw so you do what I just said bout removing invalid boot pathes.

Congratulations!

Hey congratulations Crazyone / Spencer. Got more points for you if u answer this one. I'll delete all the files like you said. After that I want to remove the dual boot screen. Then I want to rename my e: as c: so that I have a system which behaves as if only one OS (Win2k) was installed on c:. Is that possible (without reformatting?)

PS - Also tell me how to give u more points if u answer this one (2nd part only). I'm new here.
