I managed to get SUS running in our test env. the iis server in question is running AD, and via group policy its runs fine.
however the problem is we have a shite novell 6 network. hence all 2000/xp machines are in a workgroup, so administering remote machines is a problem (even given the fact that Zenworks client is the biggest pile of crap)
my question is, how is it possible for non-admin users in the workgroup (non active dir) to install SUS updates? (given the fact I have made the changes to the registry recommended by MS to so they point to the internal sus server)

Yes, you need administrative privileges if you installing updates by accessing MS Windows Update server with IE. But SUS + Automatic Updates Service combination works slightly different. Being a service, Automatic Updates Service does not need for administrator logged on to download and install updates.
If you configure Automatic Updates to automatically download and install updates, ordinary user will see only notifications that updates being installed, or finishing installed and need to reboot.

In workgroup setup AU can be configured through Local Policies or by registry editing. Refer to the same document for details.
Oh, and jt.exe, of course... This is an improved version of at.exe available in Windows 2000 Resource Kit or from following link:

Why not just force the updates to automatically install without asking and make sure the machines prompt for a reboot instead of autmatically reboot. This is done easily with GPO, which I assume doesnt work in the Zenwork env. but if you changed the location of the Update location (to point to the SUS Server) you may start by looking closely in that area.
