Question

What's the reason of the this Windows 2000 symptom

Asked by: ca_roland

Experts,

I installed a windows 2000 advanced server OS on by CD-Rom installation. I reformatted the HD by deleted and created the new partition and installed the OS on a partition about 60G.

It performed well at first several minutes. I found :

1) Clicked the hyperlink on the page in the browser, could not open the page.

2) Went to the control panel, all the items of it were squezed to the left narrow frame instead of the wide frame on the right.

3) Clicked the Add/Remove programs, open a window with nothing but some out of layout wordings and does not work at all.

4)Most important the Copy / Paste did not work!!!!

It seems like my computer was affected by some kind virus. But how come? It's a fresh HD and just hooked up to internet for several minutes and acctually I tried this format/install for several times, each time I got similar problem.

The hardware for the system is P4 2.6 G , 512m, 80 G.

Btw, I am just wondering if it's caused by the system somehow does not support windows 2000?

Thanks for any helpful input!!

ca_roland,

There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with the specs of your system. Certainly should be capable of running 2000 Advanced Server. Have you installed using this media before? Just checking for corruption!

Since this is a new install, I would go through the installation again and be sure to delete all partitions and create a separate partition for your OS boot and system files and format that using NTFS unless you plan on dual-booting. I generally suggest that you have seperate partitions for everything [C:\ for OS boot and system files, D:\ for applications, E:\ for data]. This way, if something goes wrong with your OS install, you can blow that partition away and reinstall and leave your data unaffected.

>> I tried this format/install for several times, each time I got similar problem

er, I just noticed that line! Sorry.

Are you doing an actual format each time you have attempted this?

KingHollis,

Each time I boot the system through CD-ROM and choose to install a fresh NEW installation and then, when system asked me which partition I want to install it, I just indicate the partition and delete it and create a new partition. Then the system will undergo the format process of the partition.

ca_roland,
As I run through this mentally, I know that when you create the new partition, you are able to choose formatting options: NTFS or FAT and there may be options for quick erase vs full format. What file system are you choosing and which method?

Also, have you tried to install anything else on this machine to test that there's nothing wrong with it? And what about using this media on another machine? I have seen cases where the media is corrupt just enough to get you a hobbled installation.

I experienced all those same symptons a long time ago on Windows 2000. I think it was a virus but I don't remember which one.

by: KingHollisPosted on 2004-02-23 at 11:31:46ID: 10434844

BIOS virus, diggisaur?

by: diggisaurPosted on 2004-02-23 at 11:34:10ID: 10434856

No just a plain old virus.

Looks like it must be rampant on his network if he gets it within a few minues of being up.

by: KingHollisPosted on 2004-02-23 at 11:39:54ID: 10434894

To say the very least!
Perhaps to confirm diggisaur's assertion, ca_roland, we load this thing offline, install your antivirus and confirm that the OS runs fine before connected to the network. What antivirus software are you using?

Turn123,

There's some good information in this exchange. Although we don't know the answer because we were abandoned, I would still like to have the question PAQ'd so that our suggestions might help someone. But still refund the points.
