The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Setup failed to run installation:  Class not registered.

I am attempting to rebuild my Dell Lattitude 600 after a crash.  I ended up reinstalling Win2000 Pro (to a new location "NewWINNT", in case that's relevant).  I do not have the Resource CD that Dell presumably provided with the computer because the machine was gifted to me from my previous employer when I retired, so  I downloaded the specified ATI Mobility M3 driver from Dell's website.  

My Win2000Pro version is Build 2195 SP4, and my IE version is 6.0.2800.1106, but the problem I describe below occured before I applied any Win2K and IE service packs and upgrades.

When I try to install the driver, the Installshield Wizard Window comes up telling me "ATI Software Setup is preparing the InstallShield wizard, which will guide you... etc".  Before that window goes away, an ATI Software window pops up with the subject message.

I've searched a few other knowledge bases, and tried several things, including what appeared to be the most promising possible solution to this question:
Question: Why did I get "class not registered" in Win2000 when installing Write DVD!?

Answer: If you got "setup failed to run installation: class not registered" then run dcomcnfg and on the applications tab, choose install shield setup kernel and go to properties. Change the authentication level from default to none.

This did not work for me since there is no choice for InstallShield anything when I do this...

Anyhow, without reformatting C: and starting from scratch (again), can anyone help me?  My max 16 color 640x480 VGA video display is UGLY and won't do me any good when I need to give a photographic PowerPoint presentation in two days!
